Intel graphics install?

Just finished my Arch install on my Dell Inspiron 3721 laptop with an Intel i3-3227u (Intel HD Graphics 4000). I installed Gnome 3, and it seems like the graphics are pretty sluggish. For example, the mouse does not move smoothly and another example being the applications grid opening up pretty choppy. In general, it just seems that the graphics are slower than they should be. My question is, do I need to configure drivers for the integrated intel graphics or what needs to be done? Is Arch just running on generic video drivers for the moment? Thanks for the help in advance! By the way, this is my first hardcore-ish linux install, so please help me understand some terminology as well if you think it will be needed in your post! Lol

Re: Intel graphics install?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … free_video maybe this? Though that would work only if you're running gnome on x server.
Search the wiki, you'll find most of the things you need there. Once you're done reading, come back here (you'll understand that most times you can avoid creating a new thread).
A good start is Intel wiki page. Make sure you didn't miss any step wink

Re: Intel graphics install?

Did you read the wiki page? Most things are explained there.

Do you have the same performance in both Xorg and wayland?
If you use Xorg, did you try both modesetting and intel driver?

Gnome-shell is rather heavyweight, but it shouldn't be extremely laggy with your hardware (it worked perfectly fine for me on sandy bridge). You could always test if some lighter desktop worked better for you, e.g. xfce4 or plain openbox window manager.

EDIT. TearFree option mentioned above should have nothing to do with general performance. It is used to reduce screen tearing.

Disabling vsync could improve performance though..

Re: Intel graphics install?

@ooo, i'm assuming the op's experiencing visual artifacts rather than performance issues (mouse cursor "not moving smoothly" is a symptom of vsync-off or no acceleration method set). In that case, disabling vsync will cause even more visual artifacts.
If the issue is more a running out-of-memory/processing power thing, then you're totally right.

You tell us: you installed it. We don't know what you installed. Did you follow the post-installation recommendations? In particular, did you follow the wiki instructions for installing Xorg or wayland? At least the first leads you through graphics drivers issues.
