Your favorite DE/WM?

Hi!

I think that I will change my KDE out with something else, so I will ask you: "What's your favorite DE/WM and why?"

I like *box - they're simple, usable, eye-candy. I use openbox now. Try ratpoison, it rocks (but doesn't fit me, i use gimp)

OpenBox because it's freedesktop compliant, it includes good keyboard shorcuts, configuration is easy with only two xml based files it's really fast an light (less than 1M of RAM), and themes are easy to make.

And certainly because I don't like panels or useless icons in my desktop

Yeah, the *box can be really nice (I have seen the screenshots in this community xD) I have installed Openbox, but it doesn't came in the GDM-sessions-menu? Can i edit that some place?

Add a custom entry in your GDM, and put "exec openbox" in your ~/.xinitrc

Custom entry will read your .xsession which read .xinitrc so...

To add a custom entry to GDM : find the "default.desktop" file in gdm dir, copy it to "custom.destkop" and edit it, everything is explain in the file.
If I remember well you have to change default to custom, not so difficult ^^

Openbox is great. FVWM-Crystal is also nice, though I object to some of the preconfigured stuff... If only FVWM's config files were a bit less gnarly. :?

(Of course, I am using Gnome with Metacity now... The gods only know why, I've been using it for the past few months. Maybe I'll switch to OBGnome, although it seems that 2.14 doesn't play as nice with Openbox.)

pekwm: not less configurable than openbox, but you do not need gui configurators or xml files editing. Just edit human readable text files.

I also like pekwm viewports, key chains and tab management.

The only minus is that there are few themes around, but I am fully satisfied by a minimalistic industrial theme.

I do not like panels and icons (a specific key is configured to show a list of the open windows, and a hand-made menu is displayed through a mouse gesture). On the contrary, I need a system tray for certain apps: thus, I use trayer, a stand-alone system tray.

I also use netwmpager as a pager (in the AUR) and conky. Nothing else.

I use Rox. There is a kind of steep learning curve, but is great!

I could never really get into ROX... But then I always turn off single-click opens in KDE. It would also be nice if ROX didn't need its own separate icon set, but that's another matter I guess.

(I usually use Nautilus... Yeah I know. It's not that fast, but it does everything I need it to. I've tried Thunar a few times, and I do like it better, but it peeves me that it needs to use a crappy unmaintained daemon in order to do what other FMs do without said daemon.)

Why does someone talk about Filemanagers? It's a "discussion" of DE/WM's? ROX, Nautilus and Thunar is Filemanagers, or am I wrong?

rox is more than just a file manager. its Riscos On linuX, or something like that
it also does
desktop icons
manages desktop background
shows iconized (minimized) windows on the desktop
draw a panel
run AppDirs
the required rox lib also has some classes for drag and drop loading and saving

there's a window manager called oroborox thats sort of part of the official rox family its not too terrible, looks decent, decent keybinding support but lacks a root menu and a lot of the cool features of the *boxen, also lacks intelligent window placement, but comes with full gui config tools.

also thunar is just a file manager but nautilus also manages desktop icons and backgrounds.
and you can generally use most installed gtk icon themes in rox, it just has it's own by default

IIRC, XFCE 4.4 uses Thunar to handle desktop backgrounds, icons, etc.

Edit: never mind, I figured out how, and how to make ROX stop using single-click navigation. Anyone know how to make it stop flashing a black frame around directories I've just left, though? :?

in option under types, although it will default to its theme for certain icons if your chosen theme lacks something it's looking for and it seems much less forgiving on theme icon names than say thunar or nautilus so some themes just don't work or only half work. but most should work okay.

I use fluxbox. It's kinda hard to find themes for, but other then that I love it. I has a cool tabbing feature that allows you to tab multiple windows, so I can have a tab with firefox, another with opera, another with bluefish, another with xchat, ect. I guess there are other wm's that can do this, but fluxbox is the only one I've tried.

i used to use openbox. i found it slow (especially when you flick your mouse down a menu quickly, it doesn't render very smoothly)

my requirements for a wm were antialiased font support, root menu, and not much else. pekwm will also tab your windows, and includes a method for automatically setting properties of windows (ie, always group xterm and xchat windows together, or start firefox on desktop 2)

edit: also, i was disappointed with openbox's lack of releases. pekwm releases occasionally, fixing bugs. i believe they're talking about a rewrite of the code for the next major version.
