My Computer has started to beep at me

Every now in then I get a beep, sometimes one, other times several.  Two different beeps sometimes a lower tone then a higher tone. I'm runnning testing with KDE. This just started  a couple of days ago. I opened up the box all fans (5) are running. Sometimes it does it  soon after  I boot and then every now and then. Any ideas    :?:

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

I've disabled the pc speaker (rmmod pcspkr) beause I hate those beep sounds, but other than that my BIOS beeps when initializing. It might be that your BIOS is trying to inform you of something (have you checked in BIOS if it says something of it there?)

Just in case, this isn't a terminal beeping?

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

I think it's the accessibility features in KDE that give you this beep - those features are enabled by holding certain keys for a few seconds (try the shift key for example - you get a high beep after a few seconds, then a low one, then a confirmation dialog). Could that be it? It was for me, seems like I often unconsciously rest my hand on one of the shift keys or something. smile

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

Appears to be solved. I checked the bios as suggested by jaboua, while nothing seemed wrong I made a couple of minor  changes to a couple of setting and the beeping has stopped.
I am familiar with what snader said might be  the problem and it wasn't that.

I was wrong its back.

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

I remember when I first got my laptop, it took me about a week to realise that it beeped at me everytime I typed because there is a "Key Beep" option in the BIOS...  That was annoying...

What is the output of "lsmod"?

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

It isn't a software problem, this morning when I turned on the computer it beeped before the POST was finished. Arch hadn't even started to boot. I'm going to try a different keyboard and mouse.  :?

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

You could always just unplug the speaker (assuming it is beeping through the internal one and not the sound card).  First thing I did when I got my last case was pulled the speaker out.  Sadly, the laptop beeps through the sound card so there is no such luck there...

Just don't load the PC speaker module, and you won't hear any beeps (assuming it's a Linux box). You could also try muting the Aux channel on your soundcard, which mutes my PC speaker.

I don't know what's wrong with you people anyway. I like it when my computer beeps at me (when it should anyway... Normc's problem sounds irritating). I've found that raising the beep's pitch to around 15000 Hz makes it much pleasant to hear. Almost subliminal.

What I'd really like to know is how so many people (presumably running Arch Linux) have had to go and disable the beep, whereas I had to explicitly add the pcspkr module to make both my computers start beeping.

Re: My Computer has started to beep at me

My beep is caused by the hardware not software so the only way to stop it is to disconnect the speaker. It seems to have calmed down now very few beeps lately.

Quetion for chrismortimore. I see you are from Edinburgh, UK.
I'm going on a bus tour of the UK at the end of August early Sept. one of the stops is in Edinburgh. What kind of weather can I expect :?:

Edinburgh is usually very dry or very wet, it's just a case of luck really.  In August/September time, usually dry.  Not too hot, not too cold, the kind of temperature where you'd wear a t-shirt, but carry a jumper just in case.  Oh, and it's really really windy.  On a good day, you get amazing weather, on a bad day you'll wish you never heard of Edinburgh (or in my case, which you didn't live there tongue), so check the forecast before you pack wink

You misunderstand me. It sounds like many people who don't want the beep had it by default, but for some reason I (who did want it) had to do some work to enable it. It's ironic that the only person who wants his computer to beep is also the only person whose computer didn't beep on its own.

Sorry man, I got the wrong end of the stick as always.  I agree, it is ironic though...

More than a little confusing too... maybe my PC speakers weren't autodetected or something.

Or maybe you could just do this in your /etc/rc.conf. If you unplug your pc speaker, you won't hear the alarm when your CPU gets too hot for example.

This is an array of modules that you do not want to be loaded at bootup. For example, if you don't want that annoying PC speaker, you could blacklist the pcspkr module.

But if linux isn't making the beeps (he said it sometimes beeped before linux started) it won't work.
