kde stucks at playing sounds after recent upgrade

after recent upgrade, if kde plays a sound (for example if you try delete a file you don't have the right permission) it gets stuck for 3 seconds and then the sound is played. before the sound played immediatly.
any ideas?

Well for one, the KDE sound system is far from perfect, when I used KDE I disabled them completely because of the fact that there was a major delay between the sounds. I don't have a fix for your problem, but try disabling sounds. Or changing the "delay" option in sound options to "1"

Don't use arts - "pacman -S sox", disable the sound server in kcontrol and then make system notifications use the command "play" to play sounds instead of arts.

Re: kde stucks at playing sounds after recent upgrade

when i changed to play the sounds with the play-command it works flawlessly.
did this without a "pacman -S sox"...
but doesn't the play command use the same sound device as kde?
and where is the delay option that i should set to"1"?

Re: kde stucks at playing sounds after recent upgrade

KDE uses "arts" by default - it is a daemon that will mix all sounds sent to it (and might apply filters to the sound iirc) before sending it to the audio device. Before that was necesarry, because if not, only one application could use the sound device at the time - unless you had a soundcard with hardware mixing. But now thanks to "dmix", you don't need either a sound daemon or a soundcard with hardware mixing to play multiple sounds at the time. Since arts, which was causing the freezes, isn't necesarry anymore, you can use the "play" command to play directly to the sound device without going through arts.

It will be changed in KDE4 - they are making a modular multimedia system named Phonon:

Arts will still be available through phonon, but other sound systems will as well.

I'm not saying it won't be changed as stated in KDE-4, but let's just say I'll believe it when it actually happens. I've been hearing about the removal of ARTS for a _long_ time and it's still kicking (damn it).
