Hi,
i had the bad idea to change the default font of my system and now i'm getting mad to fix it. As DE, i'm using mate and i changed the font from control center panel.
Now when i use chromium i have a terrible rendering and some minor problems also in firefox but i just want to use chromium as before.
I tried to follow the wiki to set fontconfig but i did not understand at all, because i did some attempt with any result. Also tried to change font from chromium and get a worst behavior.
Thanks in advance for any help.
edit: I did a stupid thing and now if i reinstall fontconfig 2.12 i receive:
warning: directory permissions differ on /etc/fonts/conf.d/
filesystem: 777 package: 755
So, also after:
chmod 777 /etc/fonts/conf.d/
Nothing change, same error

Ok, to sum up you did something with some font in the mate control center and got terrible rendering in chromium. Then you did something else font related in chromium and things got worse. Then you did something stupid and get a warning that the permissions are 777 while they should be 755 and "changing" them to 777 fixed nothing.
Maybe you'd like to fill in the generics??

Ok pardon. I just setting my whole system after a fresh install. Most of things that i need works very well, also fonts and rendering (because i don't know really now if this is my problem) and when is turn of change font i took the lucida grande font, installed and later chosen from mate control center. After that i started to have that problem with chromium and terminal but i fixed almost the terminal from its option.
In my little experience with linux and arch based distro like manjaro or archbang (my last installation of arch is pure) i noticed that when i use mate or cinnamon or other de like these, i had an amount of auto settings and when i edit something from default option, things getting strange and i do not have the behavior I expect. It is probably a bargain.
sudo mkdir $HOME/.cache/fontconfig/conf.d
sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf $HOME/.cache/fontconfig/conf.d
sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-autohint.conf $HOME/.cache/fontconfig/conf.d
sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/11-lcdfilter-default.conf $HOME/.cache/fontconfig/conf.d
mv /etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf $HOME/.cache/fontconfig/conf.d/99-user.conf
I mentioned a change of font from chromium, from settings -> customize fonts -> changed both standard font, serif font, sans-serif font, fixed width font with lucida grande.
For the stupid thing I was messing with pointers and user variables and i deleted the files into /etc/fonts/conf.d/ (i did a backup because first i just trying another thing but when i replaced i get that -right- error.

What about other fonts than Lucida Grande?
And: is that genuine or one of the plenty crappy clones/conversions from some OSX theme pack?
Also I guess screenshots would be a good idea to illustrate "terrible".

Before first change of font i had 'Monospace regular'. After making the mess i quickly changed settings as before but with any result.
I don't know man i downloaded from here:
http://www.911fonts.com/font/download_L … r_6216.htm
Sure:
https://ibb.co/jU0L56 <- chromium
https://ibb.co/mLMtQ6 <- same page in firefox

The font in chromium is obviously not Lucida Grande - likely because your download doesn't provide a bold variant ...
Search eg. for macbuntu.

So in your opinion is fault of a inadequate font? At the bottom of that download page there is:
This font family also include next fonts:
Lucida Grande Bold
Ehm, i would not be so extreme if is possible, cause i really like my actual system as is it. I just chosen this font cause i know it and i like it legibility. I don't know many font but that stock is a bit ugly for me.
Should i install this macbuntu?
I have this on mate control center under appearance:

This macubuntu contains some usable ttf versions of lucida grande which you might want to use instead of the one from that page which does NOT contain a bold variant.
Your shady font distribution rather refers to http://www.911fonts.com/font/download_L … d_6215.htm ... so install that as well if you will.

Did you actually search to find out what Macbuntu is? I guess not .... And I don't think the suggestion is that you necessarily install it, anyway.

A bit late, but install ttf-liberation with pacman, makes website fonts look a lot better!

Did you understand that he *wants* Lucida Grande?
There's a ton of decent and complete fontsets in the repos and the AUR, but he *wants* Lucida Grande. Liberation won't help him a dime.
Liberation was modeled after Arial (MS crappy Helvetica knock.off) and Times New Roman. It's not related to the Lucida family.
