Instantly disconnected from Wifi

I'm using networkmanager to connect to wireless which is usually hassle-free. However, on one particular network, I'm instantly getting disconnected when I connect. If I boot my laptop in Windows 7 I can connect without issue. The connection security is set to wpa2 with EAN encryption. I've had similar issue on other networks where disabling IPv6 solved the issue. If I disable both IPv4 and 6 I can connect to the network, but obviously have no internet.
Any idea what to do?

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

Hello ahura,

I know it isn't a solution, however, some friendly advise. I am not trying to start a discussion about what the best network manager is, but just expressing my experience. I am an university student right now, and I therefore has to log in and out of many WI-FI networks every day, and must say that Netctl just works flawlessly everywhere, in contradiction to networkmanager, where I remember that I had a similar problem. The reason I also have had trouble with networkmanager is that I use scripts to change MAC etc. every time I log in to a new network, or reconnect, which I know that networkmanager can handle, but it doesn't work as well as Netctl from my experience. So if you have time, try to look into alternatives, some just works better on different computers, and Netctl have only had minor errors on my computer.

Have you tried to reinstall networkmanager? Just an idea, that sometimes solves some problems. Hope you find a solution.

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

Another idea is to check the logs for the disconnect reason and of course to conduct a https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … nual_setup to get a better idea of what's failing.
What is "EAN encryption"? Typo?

Yes, I meant AES.

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

Output from journalctl - seems like the problem is with autoconfiguring IP adresses, correct? I verified that that my Windows partition also is set to automatically get an IP address, so still unsure as to how to solve this.

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

Would suggest trying Wireless_network_configuration#Manual_setup.
Remember to stop all network management services before starting on this.  Please post the commands used and output generated until you reach an error.

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

Also ensure there's only one network managing service

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled
systemctl list-units | grep -iE '(net|dhcp|wpa|conn|wicd)'

You are connected for exactly 30 seconds, which sounds suspicious.

There seems to be only one network manager running.

Nope, only NM.
So please stop that service and try a manual connection as referenced in comments #3 & #6

Okay, I did this and encountered two things which I'm not sure what to make of. First, when I list interfaces, I get two when NM is running, but the top one disappears after I stop it. Not sure if that's expected, but wanted to mention it in case:

phy#0
	Unnamed/non-netdev interface
		wdev 0x3
		addr b8:8a:60:5f:cc:a1
		type P2P-device
		txpower 0.00 dBm
	Interface wlp2s0
		ifindex 2
		wdev 0x1
		addr b8:8a:60:5f:cc:a1
		type managed
		channel 1 (2412 MHz), width: 20 MHz, center1: 2412 MHz
		txpower 22.00 dBm

Second, I get an error when I follow the manual setup guide, concretely when following the steps to connect with wpa_passphrase.

 wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp2s0 -c <(wpa_passphrase mySSID mypassword)

This gives me:

Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant

Running the same thing with sudo gives

Oddly, I'm getting the same error when attempting to connect to my phone's hotspot, which works fine when connecting with NM. Any thoughts?

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

Ugh, sorry, I missed the #. However, running it from root and then following the instructions to obtain in IP address give no errors, but there's still no connection:

[root@ahura omd]# wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp2s0 -c <(wpa_passphrase SSID PASSWORD)
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
[root@ahura omd]# dhcpcd wl2s0
sending commands to master dhcpcd process
[root@ahura omd]# ping google.com
ping: google.com: Name or service not known

Re: Instantly disconnected from Wifi

"ping 8.8.8.8"?
"dhcpcd -d"?
"ip route"?

Ultimately try dhclient instead.
