I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

Hi everybody !

I have just installed arch and i3 wm in a new laptop (dell inspiron) when I try to run rofi from the keyboard shortcut inserted in i3/config file as follow :

bindsym $mod+g exec rofi -show run

rofi does't run ! but if I write in a terminal

rofi -show run

i made some modification inserted in the .Xresources file as follow :

rofi.color-enabled: true
rofi.color-window: #9915262c, #9915262c, #38acd6
rofi.color-normal: #FF15262c, #2CB2B2, #FF15262c, #2CB2B2, #182e3e
rofi.color-active: #FF15262c, #38acd6, #FF15262c, #38acd6, #15262c
rofi.color-urgent: #FF15262c, #dc322f, #FF15262c, #dc322f, #15262c

rofi.hide-scrollbar:    true
rofi.font:              Meslo LG S DZ 13
rofi.separator-style:   solid
rofi.fullscreen:        false
rofi.fixed-num-lines:   true

rofi.bw:                0

rofi.width:             1920

rofi.lines:             10

rofi.line-margin:       0

rofi.eh:                1

rofi.location:          2

rofi.columns:           3

rofi.sidebar-mode:     true

rofi.padding:           426

but when I run it from shell , it runs correctly with these configuration on ! what can I do ? thanks in advance !

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

related to the keypress; prepend a short sleep. rofi will try to grab the keyboard and i3 has it at this moment.

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

exec commands should be wrapped in "  " if they have spaces in between them.

 bindsym $mod+g exec "rofi -show run"

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

I don't know anything about i3 keybinding, but using quotes around commands with parameters when dealing with "normal" shell exec implementations will fail for sure.
Try for yourself:

exec xterm -rv # good
exec "xterm -rv" # bad

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

i3 calls

 $SHELL -c <command>

for an exec command.
Anything given in the quotes is executed as one.
As a test case,

 $ i3 'exec "rofi -show run"'

is same as

 $ $SHELL -c "rofi -show run"

My i3 config is full of exec command with spaces, and none of them are wrapped in quotes, they all work. As an example

bindsym $mod+Return exec i3-msg workspace 1:[T] && termite
bindsym Mod1+Return exec termite --class=TERM
bindsym $mod+f exec i3-msg workspace 1:[T] && termite --class=ranger -e ranger
bindsym $mod+w exec i3-msg workspace 1:[T] && termite -e network
bindsym $mod+m exec i3-msg workspace 1:[T] && termite --class=mutt -e mutt
bindsym $mod+n exec i3-msg workspace 1:[T] && termite --class=news -e newsboat
bindsym $mod+p exec termite --class=pass -e passr
bindsym $mod+z exec i3-msg workspace 3:[M] && termite --class=ncmpcpp -e ncmpcpp

## Screen capture ##
bindsym Print exec sleep 0.2 && /home/me/bin/captureall

## MPD ##
bindsym XF86AudioPlay exec mpc toggle
bindsym XF86AudioNext exec mpc next
bindsym XF86AudioPrev exec mpv prev

@OP, I am able to run

bindsym $mod+g exec rofi -show run

without any issues.

Did you update config with $mod+c (default) after you made changes to your config file.

 i3 'exec "rofi -show run"'
20/12/2017 10:56:10 - Additional arguments passed. Sending them as a command to i3.
[{"success":true}]

but rofi doesn't run !!

Maybe someone is trying, but you keep ignoring him.  Seth has made a good suggestion ... twice.  And you're acting like you've not even seen it.

So to allow yourself  to release the key

prepend a short sleep

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

If responding to yourself, please use the edit function.    If your finger is still on the key when Rofi starts, then things break; or so goes the theory.   You need to put something in between where the key press is detected and rofi starts to give you time to get your finger off of the key.  Use sleep, or output a beep, or anything to delay the start of rofi for a couple hundred mS.

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

Without resorting to a sleep or beep you can do it from your i3 config file.  From the I3 manual:

i3 manual wrote:

Some tools (such as import or xdotool) might be unable to run upon a KeyPress event, because the keyboard/pointer is still grabbed. For these situations, the --release flag can be used, which will execute the command after the keys have been released.

Syntax:

bindsym [--release] [<Group>+][<Modifiers>+]<keysym> command
bindcode [--release] [<Group>+][<Modifiers>+]<keycode> command

I should add however that I run i3 with rofi just fine without any of this.  Pertinent line in my config:

bindsym $mod+d exec --no-startup-id rofi -show run

I'm assuming that you have nothing else bound to $mod+g, and also assuming that anything else you have bound to $mod in your i3 config is indeed working?

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

bindsym $mod+g exec sleep 0.2 && rofi -show run

And ensure you got sleep installed.

Re: I3 rofi doesn't run from shortcut

And does binding the same key to some other command work?

EDIT: while we're at it, please post your full i3 config and your ~/.xinitrc.

Also, if you don't have an ~/.xinitrc perhaps you could infer that I wanted to know how you startx and you'd post the relevant startup/configuration file.

You're making it hard to help you, don't expect anyone to keep trying much longer if you don't start putting in some more effort.
