My HP Deskjet Ink 4615 fails to print upon upgrading from hplip-3.17.10-2 to 3.17.11-1.
Cups informs "Filter failed".
Downgrading solves the problem.
I am running current linux-4.14.4-1, systemd-235.38-2, cups-2.2.6-1 and cups-filters-1.17.9-3.
I recall experiencing similar issue around the time of kernel 3.7. The problem disappeared
after a subsequent upgrade of the hplip package. Thou my printer was even older by that
occasion.
Best regards.

Great! Ought to be that.
Compilation option "--enable-hpijs-install" should be missing in
version 3.17.11-1 of the package.
I have created a new printer setup in cups with hpcups driver, instead of hpijs.
Now the printer seems to be working fine.
Thank you very much for the tip.
