Hello,
I've a HP PSC 1110 connected on my computer. I placed hplip before cups in /etc/rc.conf file. The services are started correctly and it seems to recognise my printer since i can see the statistics about it from the console with hp-* stuff..
Any way; the CUPS web interface looks beautiful but it really has problems right now.. I don't know if anybody else have the problem but it writes {deviceurl} etc etc stuff in titles and it doesn't add my printer to cups..
I tried hp-setup and it added my printer to cups but i can't see it in let's say gedit..
CUPS web interface doesn't ask my root password by the way..

when you are selecting your printer, are you using the cups interface [Admin]
it should prompt you for the root:pass once you hit that button, but will allow you to view the first page without any login.
the HP printer you have there seems to have a valid foomatic driver. cant see why ur modifying conf files, maybe its something ive not picked up on.
one of other variables you have to set, when using [add printer] is the port.
i used lpt. from the dropdown menu. as an example heres my 2 (HP first) from the printers info page.
Device URI: parallel:/dev/lp0
Device URI: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20R300
iirc the deviceurl thing you have is an address for the printer, and the thing in brackets seems to be the default expression u modify. did mine via dropdown menu, seems if you choose network types, the you spec the full URL.
went thro this a dozen times as my HP has loads of different drivers, and port options. Eventually i got it sorted by trial and error.
stick in there. !

Mine doesn't show either, instead, it shows "Print as postscript" I print that, an walla. It prints off to my printer.

I ran into the same problem with a Samsung printer, and a new printer driver from Samsung fixed it.
Samsung uses install scripts that can be executed from an autorun file from the download. I use gksu, which is not a default arch application, but can be installed with pacman. It allows you to run a program from the commandline with root privilege, and allow it to run properly. If you just sign in as root, it won't work. Only reason I use gksu is because I use firestarter firewall, so I might as well have that app, too. HA!!!
I noticed my printer installs more thoroughly through the Manufacturer-driver-provided scripts. For some reason, mine insisted on installing sane this time around. That was strange. I just opted to install the Arch package of sane, restart the script, and add my user to the scanner group.
Another thing I noticed was that the device is listed as such:
mfp:/dev/mfp4
I'm clueless on that, but maybe it means something to you. I know it's not under the /dev directory.
Good luck!

True but printer works ...
I looked for my printer on LinuxPrinting & was not listed the model nearest was partly working ..
This is my third printer and although they worked under Linux I was always having problems with Cups
So far no problems at all guess thats all that matters
Not saying that you or anyone should use Turboprint just giving the option
