Firefox won't start after update

I recently updated my system, and after that firefox (and chromium) won't start anymore.
When I run it in terminal there is no output.

Here is the fixes I've already tried:
- I uninstalled and reinstalled it but it didn't help.
- I removed ~/.mozilla/firefox/ directory and still have the issue.
- I downloaded Firefox from their website and extracted and ran it: ./firefox, but it didn't help either.

Any help would be appreciated.

What was updated? Paste your pacman log. You can strace firefox for clues.

I have the same problem. My Firefox wont open. Same with chromium. The only browser that opens is the Gnome one.

have you tried using strace as suggested by Jason? Also, have you checked frk's thread?

I also tried blacklisting radeon and adding amdgpu to the modules, but that fails to init

I have similar problem but for google chrome browser and its derivatives: none of them start. The system was fully updated yesterday. And now the situation is that:

working: firefox 56, 58beta from AUR, waterfox 56
does not start: google chrome (stable, beta, developer from AUR), opera, vivaldi

Removing configuration files for chrome does not solve the problem.

How about one, any one, of you many "me too" posters actually post the strace as requested at the start of the thread.

It will be long.  Use a file sharing site.  There are several good ones listed on our wiki.  The first page of an strace is not useful.  The last page might be, but just share the whole thing if you want help.

Hi,

After having the same issue after a recent update I just wanted to share a couple of observations.

For me, this only happens under a wayland session. I just logged into a Gnome 3.26 X session, and firefox / chromium work fine. Secondly, if I try and debug a recently developed java application in the Gnome 3.26 wayland sesion, it fails and I get:

X Error of failed request:  BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  149 ()
  Minor opcode of failed request:  2
  Serial number of failed request:  34
  Current serial number in output stream:  35

However do the same in the Gnome 3.26 X session, no issues.

I think the issue is associated with Xwayland so I am looking there.

Sorry for not being responsive I was away and didn't have access to Internet.

@frk I think I had the same issue (I could run firefox by killing the second firefox process!!)
Today I applied your solution (after 2 weeks and a huge update) but it didn't help either.

@Trilby strace firefox never ends in my machine it keeps producing following lines just like what @joanmanel experienced.

Hey all, long time listener, first time caller. I'm having this issue as well using Gnome on Wayland.

Sometime around Dec 25 I restarted after a pacaur -Syu after not having restarted for ~2 weeks. This included a kernel upgrade. The following apps stopped working after the restart:
- FF
- Chrome
- PgAdmin4
- MongoDB compass
- LibreOffice

I don't know if they were working after the upgrade before the restart, but I had updated everything a few days prior with no issues (and no restart). I tried linux-lts to no avail. Since I'd recently replaced a dead HDD, I wondered if mdadm borked something in the rebuild, so I tried reinstalling Arch.

After the reinstall, Chrome and FF worked fine, but I'm still having the issue with PgAdmin4, Libre and MongoDB Compass. When I reinstalled I blasted .local and .config, except for some app configurations for other apps such as Atom which are symlinked. Initially after the reinstall I did not install any graphics drivers (AMDGPU, non-Pro). After installing AMDGPU, nothing seemed to change. I'm also noticing a bit of extra slowness in general, that might be Intel's fault, but I have one giant Java app that I use from time to time and it has slowed down substantially; it would be unusably slow if I could avoid using it. It's like OpenVPN over TCP slow, and it feels more like lag than load. In addition to `wayland`, `gnome`, and `gnome-extra`, I think the only other GUI-affecting package I have installed is `qt5-wayland`, and I've tried removing anything I've written that's x-and-friends related from my home directory with no change.

It looks like you already have some traces of FF (plus mine works now anyways, I can post a working FF strace if you want...), so here are some from the other apps:

pgadmin4 shows the Gnome chrome and everything inside is just as black as Bill Gates' heart. If I click the "x" to close it, it will hang for a bit and give me the "force quit" dialog.
