Hi,
I want to know if its only my Arch installation which is damaged quite regurlarly after a pacman -Syu?
I did my last update yesterday. Result:
KDE: "Terminal executable not found!"
X11: "Can't open display!"
Webcam: completely removed.
Maybe even some more, but I couldnt find out yet.
Its only me to have these problems? Im afraid I would get a "Never touch a running system"-like OS.
Please tell me its just bad luck...

X11 as user.
/home ls -la I will check for.
It just kicked my driver again. Seems everytime I make an update. Last time it was the big change betweend the xorg versions, but this is really needed.
Maybe its just bad luck and I made sth wrong somewhere.
I just want to complain (not so serious)

It just may be a problem a with Xorg.conf (/etc/X11/)
driver are you talking Nvidia/Ati ?
you not complaining about Arch you are just having a problem ... thats what the forums are for ;-)
We are here to help

Driver is ATI.
What was/is strange: Before I just used "hwd -xa" to get xorg.conf configured. But now it doesnt work anymore.
Seems there is really sth wrong.
[OFFTOPIC]Did anybody get "Parallels Workstation" get to work on Arch?[/OFFTOPIC]

arrg.. i wish someone never would have made the hwd program. it seems each time i see a problem it's related to hwd. it's an automatic tool and could never replace getting aquinted with xorg.conf yourself.
Maybe they changed something with the newest fglrx rel that makes it not work anymore if you have the settings hwd generated which worked for an older version of fglrx.
open the xorg.conf, you probably only need to change one or two entries if the fglrx entry is the one causing your x server not to boot.
and again, i appreciate the thought of hwd if the author should read this thread. what i don't appreciate is to tell newbies to "just run hwd/insert other automatic tool here" and insert some belief into them that this tool will solve all their problems automagically without them needing to look at "scary" config files... that just breeds more fud than there was when something doesn't work quite as it should

Just to make one thing clear: I am not afraid of config files It was just a handy tool up to now and it WORKED.
To be honest, its much more comfortable for me to just enter one command and it works than checking everything by myself...
If the author updates hwd and it works with the new fglrx, I will use it again. Scared?

Can I assume you have fixed the problem
hwd is a great tool but just do not take it for granted .... get X up sure but then check & edit as required
I think you should let rasat know what you have found I'm sure he would be grateful (do not be scared!)
There are some very scary Arch users I know because I am one

X is not the problem anymore, I am just "annoyed" by the fact that seems after each update I have to reconfigure a lot.
All I want is: "pacman -Syu" ... updated and works
Offline
Well I update nearly every day ... & latley not had a problem
think you/we have to narrow down whats causing the break
pacman.log may be a start
Once X is set you should not need to edit it after every update...if its working then lets find the next problem
Do not give up on Arch its a great distro... its more than likley something real simple to fix just atm difficult to find always the way ;-)
If I could sum up Arch it would be pacman, cactus and Dusty

I wont give up as I am quite far already. I just need to find a way to get my favorite coding software to work. I tried
wine -> failed
parallels Workstation -> failed (until now)
vmware -> I give it a try
I keep you up to date, but I think I will reinstall my Arch with all new software from the beginning and maybe...just update more often???
Thanks for suffering with me

vmplayer will work under Arch errr maybe vmware are you geting stuck with config?
parallels I could get it to work under Arch (but shhh under ubuntu it does;-))
wine emmm I have used it but I'm not going to that dark place of MS again lol
Arch is like anyway you have never been before it just takes a little while to get around.....

I dont like Ubuntu. I chose Linux as I want to have 100% control over my PC (at least almost, right hwd? ).
Ubuntu restricts me too much.
I like the similarity to FreeBSD (don't kill me for that). I love FreeBSD!!!
I need an emulator to get it work. Wine + MSN works, but I need sth for my coding software. Without it, I cant migrate to Linux completely. Sorry.
Sb got it to work (Parallels), but he doesnt know how He made a package but doesnt work for too many people. Damn it.

I have not used wine that much so cannot help with that ....
vmware/vmplayer will work look for vmware-any-any-update101 may help
ubuntu man I do not use it .... Its on my laptop because I too lazy to set up Arch & for testing stuff ...When! I get round to it I will install Arch
parallels on my machine gives me
parallels
/usr/lib/parallels/parallels-linux: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
to hell with it use qemu + kqemu lol

Well, well...
I will try to get parallels or vmware to run properly. Otherwise I will have a look at (at the first glance difficult) qemu.
Thanks for your hints...

Install libstdc++5. If it's already installed, reinstall it.

I will give both a try and then... Let's [EDIT]see[/EDIT] who wins the race
EDIT: Brain faster than fingers...
EDIT2: As I am already editing: "Let us see which software will win the race!"

Lets get back to the topic, this is not a chat, Dude
pacman rocks!

I run pacman -Syudf most weekends and just let it do whatever. I almost always end up with some thing breaking. Then I come here to figure out how to fix it. Most things have been minor. I don't bother reading the upgrade warnings or announcements. I live dangerously.... either that or I'm just too lazy.
