iwlwifi driver for 7265D only stable on one particular kernel

So I have a pretty strange problem. My wifi connection is stable when connecting to an WPA2 enterprise network
only when I'm on  a particular kernel version: 4.12.13-1. This loads ucode version 7265D-27.

I've tried it on the lts kernel 4.9.x and the stable kernel 4.14. They're both really unstable, and my wifi barely works when I'm
on these kernels! I have no idea why, and I've pored over logs and forum posts.

So now I'm worried that I wont be able to apply security fixes to my kernel like the spectre and meltdown patches!
