[SOLVED] Boot stuck on Reached target Graphical Interface

Hello!

NOTE: I am on VirtualBox

I am a newbie and I have just finally managed to install Arch Linux. I have also installed Xorg, the Plasma KDE desktop environment and the LightDM display manager.
The issue is with the latter, which I have enabled to start on boot, but I have neglected to install the proper display drivers. It fails to start and I'm stuck. I have tried to solve this by finding a way to run a rescue terminal or just disabling the lightdm service again, but every post I see or wiki page says to run certain commands on a terminal, but my problem is I can't get to a terminal! I've tried through the liveCD but even after mounting the boot partition and trying different commands there, nothing really works.

I obviously don't have the right Linux knowledge for this and an easy solution is to just reinstall the whole thing, but I was hoping for a more elegant solution. Thank you guys!

Re: [SOLVED] Boot stuck on Reached target Graphical Interface

It should be enough to boot using a live cd, mount your broken install and chroot into it. (Use arch-chroot, if availlable). When done, "systemctl disable lightdm.service" should deactivate your dm for the next boot.

When that is done you should be able to complete your X config.

If you need further support, please tell us exactly what you did and which results those commands had. "trying different commands there, nothing really works." doesn't say enough about the current state of your problem.

Regards, Jens

Thanks but I already tried to this, I don't quite understand how to append anything to the bootloader...

Read the section jason linked again, there's a link, follow it read that page.

This is generally a good practice to get used to, most of the wiki is split into small digestible parts where if you find you don't understand a section it will often contain a link that brings you to further information. This avoids unnecessary duplication and keeps the maintenance burden reasonable.

Re: [SOLVED] Boot stuck on Reached target Graphical Interface

Thanks for the tips guys. I just keep getting confused, I tried live booting and mounting the system but I can't find the other system and I don't really know how to mount it through the live cd, I read that help page before I made the post and my problem is the same, I don't know where to use any commands since no terminals appear before it gets stuck which brings me to the live CD solution which I can't really use since I don't know how to mount my Arch Linux on it...  I'll try a bit more but this is getting ridiculous, I might just reinstall the system from scratch... Arch in itself is already quite a chore to install, fixing it is just proving to be a bit too painful for someone who has never truly used Linux before. I will keep trying though! Thanks again for the tips.

Re: [SOLVED] Boot stuck on Reached target Graphical Interface

What - exactly - is still confusing you? If the error really is only that you enabled lightdm without a proper graphical environment set up, following the advice in the section jason linked to (and the section linked therein to know how you can configure your boot loader  to append the parameter)  you really shouldn't bother with a livecd as the required setup is more complex than simply adjusting the kernel line in your boot loader).

Edit: Ah nice to hear, please mark as [SOLVED] by editing the title of your first post.

Re: [SOLVED] Boot stuck on Reached target Graphical Interface

I don't know how to mount my Arch Linux on it

Well, how did you install Arch in the first place?

EDIT: Wow, I'm late to this party.

I followed the instructions and fiddled around a bit, took a couple retries but I got the gist of it now. smile

Re: [SOLVED] Boot stuck on Reached target Graphical Interface

What I'm getting at is that mounting your partitions is an important step in the installation process. For you to not know how to mount them again, in the exact same environment as you were in when you first installed Arch, suggests to me that you either a) copy-pasted from a third-party guide, b) used some third-party script, or c) installed another distribution (e.g. Manjaro, Antergos, etc).

In cases a) and b), you should reinstall by following the installation guide so you understand how your system is put together, and how it works. For c), you should seek support on the support channels for the distribution you installed.
