[RESOLVED] Unable to boot Inspiron 1012 A12

I have recently installed Arch on an Inspiron 1012 A12. I don't believe the laptop supports uefi, so I installed grub on an mpr disk. When I boot up the computer I get to

starting version 237
/dev/sda2: recovering journal
/dev/sda2: clean

at this point the screen goes black, with the backlight still on.

I have tried with

nomodeset

, which does the same as above, but the screen does not go black and it just gets stuck.

My partition table is
/dev/sda1: swap 4G
/dev/sda2: Linux ext4 246G (bootable flag)

sudo systemctl mask systemd-backlight@leds\:dell\:\:kbd_backlight.service
