Large problem memory leakage

Hi.

I have a big memory leak problem on Archlinux Cinnamon 3.6 with kernel-lts.

After 11 hours of operation, the cinnamon process --replace takes 1.6 GB of ram.
http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/img/1518300104.png
In just 1 hour of operation, the cinnamon process --replace already takes 300 MB...

Am I the only one with this bug??
Since version 3.4 the problem is present, what happens??
I've already reported 3 bugs on the cinnamon github, but without any manifestation from the developers, they are racist towards the users of archlinux??

The problem is not present on Debian Sid, even after 5 days of operation (the cinnamon process --replace only takes 160 MB)

Anybody got a solution, please??
This problem presents me with more and more performance problems on my pc...
other people have the same problem??
Is that a known problem??
What can I do to limit this excessive ram consumption??

Thank you very much.
I hope to get some help.
I don't understand what's going on.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

A screenshot of a nonsensical GUI "task manager" - in French ...

Let's try that again:

LC_ALL=C top -bn1 -o RES | head -n 50
LC_ALL=C free -h
cat /proc/meminfo

Use code tags to post the output.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

The PID 975 cinnamon process uses 151MB, the "VIRT" column is the addressable space, usually driven by mmap'd files - it does not actually imply memory consumption.
You're currently pressing on 1.13GB RAM, another 369MB could be freed anytime.

I doubt there's any leak (if this is a realistic scenario and not right after a boot - what would be pointless data)

Re: Large problem memory leakage

to make it more relevant, I just did the manipulations again.
after only 1 hour 30 minutes of operation.

if it can help you, and give better details.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

Use this python script on the PID and repeat the process from time to time (while the RES number grows, ignore the VIRT number completely)

Re: Large problem memory leakage

Thank you.
But little problem, I've never used a perl script.... neutral
I know how to execute it, with

perl rssanalyse.pl

But I don't know how we do it for the PID sad
And I don't understand the principle of this script, I'm a novice in this field hmm
A little help is welcome.

thanks

Re: Large problem memory leakage

thanks

I really don't understand the source of the problem.
or why, so much ram is consumed when I'm not doing anything special.
besides navigating on Firefox hmm

this version of Cinnamon has a problem, and yet I feel like I'm the only one who encounters this worry... it's desperate sad

I think I'll downgrade Cinnamon to version 3.4.
And if the bug persists I retrograde to version 3.2
At the risk of breaking my system.

The ram saturates too quickly, and it's felt for the encoding of the videos, I lose a lot in performance.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

Without some details that's just speculation.
Memory management is complicated and  a single big number means nothing by itself.

As you btw. can see from your former post: browsers are by far the most RAM consuming entities - "browsing" is pretty much the opposite of "nothing" itr.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

Precisely when I close Firefox, the ram goes down but the consumption of Cinnamon does not stop...

The only way is to do ALT + F2 to relaunch Cinnamon, and return to normal consumption for a while, and history repeats itself...
I just demoted Cinnamon to version 3.4.
I'll see what happens until tonight.

If no improvements, I try Mate, but Cinnamon has some very practical little details for me during my workday (especially some applets)....
My pc is my work tool, I can't afford to have a saturation machine, you understand?!!

Re: Large problem memory leakage

Just for the records: I do not use cinnamon at  all (and personally find even the name ridiculous), so I'm not somehow personally involved trying to defend popt. broken software.

What I'm trying to tell you is that if you want to get anywhere, you'll need hard and detailed data - not something that you might consider a bad number but which is in and by itself meaningless.

I understand. I also understand that you don't understand how memory management works in Linux. Contrary to your belief, you GAIN performance by letting Linux map the memory. Think of it like a Christmas party where you have a large plate in front of you while sitting at the table and a huge free for all buffet table in the next room. Now, you have two scenarios depicted in this thread, the Linux way and your way. Doing it your way you would go to the buffet table and pick one shitty potato, go back to your seat,  eat it and repeat the process fighting starvation during the whole dinner.

The other way, the smart Linux way, you would go to the buffet table and fill your plate with all the different foods you think you would like, then go back and eat for a while, then just fill up with the goodies when you want. You would never have to worry about running to the buffet table between every single chew, because you have a nice buffer of good foods on your plate to choose from. If you all of a sudden just happen to crave the whole fucking turkey for yourself, there is nothing hindering you from just scraping off your plate to fit it. Someone might be a bit bitter because you didn't like their favorite food, but you can grab more of theirs later.

This is how free looks like for me, only really using chromium and have spotify on idle to remotely change music on my phone. I don't even have a desktop manager and all the stuff you have.

$ free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 31G 5.8G 23G 303M 1.8G 26G
Swap: 0B 0B 0B

Fwwi, there *might* actually be a leak - we don't know yet because OP hasn't produced relevant data so far.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/i … -364755564

(And for luck, how about https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/7169 too.)

Apparently there are a few people who have had memory issues with Cinnamon. I cannot say as I've had no issues... I assume their usage must be somehow triggering some codepath that leaks memory. Users from Arch and Linux Mint seem to have been able to work around this by downgrading the cjs package, so it may have something to do with the javascript interpreter... I suppose it is possible that the next version of cjs which moves from js38 to js52 might fix things by sheer virtue of not running such an ancient mozjs release.

What I can say is that "I've already reported 3 bugs on the cinnamon github, but without any manifestation from the developers, they are racist towards the users of archlinux??" is a very inaccurate analysis. I fully expect the OP to reduce herself to mudslinging and insults with an accompanying ban... given how this thread started off.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

I'm not saying you're wrong B1omman, because I'm not the most gifted girl in Linux.

I just demoted to Cinnamon 3.4 & cjs 3.2 to compare.
For the moment, ram consumption is stable (160MB), the difference is huge, and the pc is fluid, despite heavy encoding of videos for an hour.
Maybe Cinnamon 3.6 handles ram differently, which would explain the "problem".
Or something consumes abnormally on my laptop, I don't know.
the more I think about it, the more I confuse myself.
I'm going to sleep, it's late in France right now.

Thanks.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

From that trainwreck of an upstream bug (which I assume our OP nuked into a lockdown... ;-) and in particular the screenshot at https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/i … -355753109
Does Cinnamon have an automatic wallpaper changer and @Eschwartz & @oxydium - do you use it?

Re: Large problem memory leakage

@seth
No, I do not use it.
I have a fixed wallpaper, which I change manually.

with Cinnamon 3.4 everything is back to normal, the pc has remained on all night long with Gimp, Libreoffice, Qbittorrent, and Firefox open, the ram consumption of Cinnamon is 75 MB...
As well as on my Debian...

For the moment I'm staying with version 3.4, and I'll see if the future version 3.8 fixes the problem.
If not, I change my desktop environment (with regrets), I can't block for life an update of the desktop environment, one day it will be a real worry for me for updates.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

I've keep rereading this thread, and I'm just completely baffled how it has not been closed and binned yet.  Oxydium, you've been asked for relevant detailed diagnostic information at least 4 times in this thread; you've even had someone (attempt to) hold your hand through the whole process including something as trivial as how to run a script (if you are using archlinux, you should know how to run a script).

Yet you've still not provided *any* of the relevant diagnostics: you just repeat the same refrain that boils down to little more than you being unhappy and expecting someone else to miraculously fix all of your problems.  If you are unwilling to participate in the troubleshooting/diagnostic process as requested, then don't just switch your DE, switch your distro.

(edit: given the below, perhaps there is sufficient information available, but I stand by my claim that it wasn't presented well in this thread - and never by the OP.  Oxydium, when you are asked for information, provide it, don't wait for someone else to go hunt it down on another website.)

Re: Large problem memory leakage

With comment #16 and the upstream bug we can actually take the leak for granted and the problem now would have to be tackled by https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … e#Valgrind
(memcheck or massif) if the cause canot be isolated by guessing (and apparently it's not wallpapers unless OP changes them manually on a rather regular basis)

Re: Large problem memory leakage

@Trilby
I am French, I am fluent in basic English, but a little less technical English...
follow a wiki to install Arch, I can do it and I understand the steps.
But I don't do python script, perl, or programming.
I know how to make small bash scripts, compile some softwares, but nothing exceptional... I'm not an expert like all of you here.

I tried with valgrind, but probably I didn't do the right thing.
I'm still putting in the results.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

callgrind is certainly the wrong tool for this, I assume one will have to resort to massif - and oc. you need to run the leaky cinnamon version for some time to gather the relevant data.
If the upstream bug wasn't closed, I'd suggest that over there because more affected ppl. would get the call.

Re: Large problem memory leakage

We don't expect expertise; we expect participation.  I'll be happy to be proven wrong, and your last post is a good step toward doing so:

I tried with valgrind, but probably I didn't do the right thing.

*This* is productive.  Even if that is not the best way to run valgrind, it does show 1) that you are trying and 2) exactly what you have done, so others like Seth can suggest next steps.
