smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

cp /etc/samba/smb.conf.default /etc/samba/smb.conf

cp: cannot stat '/etc/samba/smb.conf.default': No such file or directory

what's going wrong?

Re: smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

I don't see the file you are trying to copy mentioned anywhere in the wiki. Actually, regarding default configuration, this is what it suggests you to do.

Re: smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sa … 1.80.D0.B0

There's a first command after installing samba

# cp /etc/samba/smb.conf.default /etc/samba/smb.conf

At 2015 it did work

English version of Wiki was changed.
Russian version is not actually anymore. So Sad.

Re: smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

Trusting an article from 2015 on rolling release distro is not a good idea. But since you have now discovered this discrepancy, why not contribute back to the community by editing the corresponding section or marking it as "out of date"?

Re: smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

First, I would to know why samba.conf.default was removed from package?

Re: smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

smb.conf

Samba is configured in /etc/samba/smb.conf, if this file doesn't exist smbd will fail to start.

To get started you can copy the default config file from samba git repository to /etc/samba/smb.conf.

Did you create a separate account on the wiki?
@shulamy you are quoting what robg already linked to.  Are you responding to something posted since then?

Re: smb.conf does not exist after installing samba

Original smb.conf can be found from \samba-4.7.4\examples\smb.conf.default from sources.
But why it's been removed...

Maybe the source file has been moved to a different location and the PKGBUILD hasn't been fixed. There is a comment about installing the sample configuration.
https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … 19067#n221

  # install sample smb.conf
  install -d -m755 ${pkgdir}/etc/samba

Edit: Here is the bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/55723
