Firefox choppy!

Hi, I'm using Arch with Gnome desktop environment.
Firefox's scroll is very choppy and seems to be running at around 30fps. Is there any way to maybe pre-load elements or just make it work better?
My setup is:
i5-6600k
gtx1070 with nVidia proprietary driver
16gb

So I think it has enough hp to drive the elements.

Please help!
Thank you!

Re: Firefox choppy!

There are some known problems with the current nvidia drivers, you are likely affected by these as well:

Thank you. That may well be the cause of the issue.

Can you advise me on how to get on about downgrading my Nvidia drivers? I've checked out the wiki but it doens't mention how to downgrade, only how to install and upgrade.

Do I need to delete all nvidia drivers and reinstall with older driver?

how does it work?

Thank you!

Re: Firefox choppy!

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_packages

You do not need to remove a package to downgrade.  Pacman will remove it while installing the older version.

However, I have no idea at all whether downgrading Nvidia packages is possible/practical without also downgrading many other packages (most likely the kernel at least).

Re: Firefox choppy!

You will definitely have to downgrade the kernel as well. or alternatively follow the linked thread, there are a few people that have patched the old nvidia module and compiled it against the new kernel.

Re: Firefox choppy!

This is strange. So I followed the guys on the linked thread and was successful(!) at downgrading my nvidia drivers. except... when i reboot it somehow reverted back to 390 drivers. What is happening here?

Re: Firefox choppy!

Firstly, I just downloaded older driver from nvidia and chmod +x to run it, it didn't go through.
Next, I checked your post again and followed the link, then followed the makepkg posted by gavinhungry

>@rob-tech,
>I encountered the same issue on my workstation today. If you don't want to downgrade your kernel to 4.14, patch nvidia-387.34 with support for 4.15, and add nvidia and nvidia-utils to IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf.
>Modified PKGBUILD: https://gist.github.com/gavinhungry/f02 … b334c01c38
>nvidia-utils-387.34: https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/ … pkg.tar.xz

my terminal wasn't happy with makepkg, or the tar.xz, so i continued to read on, and followed another steps by gavinhungry

>git clone https://gist.github.com/gavinhungry/f02 … b334c01c38 nvidia-387.34
>cd nvidia-387.34
>curl -O https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/ … pkg.tar.xz
>extra-x86_64-build -c -- -I nvidia-utils-387.34-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

After this, my
sudo pacman -Qss nvidia

gave 387.34 for all the nvidia related packages.

I rebooted (i don't know if this is a required step, but I only just moved from windows and i'm still detoxing...)

sudo pacman -Qss nvidia is now showing 390.25 for all nvidia related packages.

Re: Firefox choppy!

Hi WorMzy,

pacman log doesn't show anything relevant because i haven't used pacman to follow the above step other then checking -Qss. That decided it doesn't want to show up in the log.
Is it still relevant?

Thanks!

Re: Firefox choppy!

Your pacman database is being altered, so yes, the log is relevant.

Re: Firefox choppy!

Please use code tags for commands and their outputs.  Please post the whole pacman.log the nvidia package is not in that extract.

Re: Firefox choppy!

I've.. managed to do something with nvidia drivers that arch refused to boot past gdm. I've freshely reinstalled to KDE, and promptly installed older drivers. Works now. Thank you for your help!

Edit: how do I close / flair solved this thread?

Re: Firefox choppy!

Edit your initial post's title and add [SOLVED], be aware that since you have a custom nvidia package now, you are responsible for rebuilding it on kernel updates and potentially being aware when the issue is fixed so you can switch back to the repo packages.
