Here are the problem and the symptoms:
The symptoms here are reproducible and happen every single time. At the moment I cannot use the machine at all.
Right after booting up, I start the web browser (firefox in this case) then
- the system slows down
- firefox stops responding
- I cannot kill any of the running processes including firefox
- loadavg keeps increasing from less than 1 to 50-60 and does not stop there
- cpu utilization is close to 0
- memory utilization remains constant
- no significant I/O activity
- when I start a new terminal, I don't get a prompt.
- existing terminal cannot execute any command (nothing happens after pressing enter)
- dmenu takes a really long time to load (15-30 sec) and shows weird characters

- pressing Ctrl+Alt+F{2,3,4...} brings me to the tty but after login, I don't get a prompt either
- a hard reset is required

Some clues:
- Checking dmesg, I see a bunch of these errors

[ 8776.640071] Valid eCryptfs headers not found in file header region or xattr region, inode 6557909

- if I am fast enough, I can execute shutdown command, but it takes about 10 minutes to completely shut down. This is the log that I see.

My setup:
- Lenovo x230 laptop (5 years old)
- SSD mSATA 256GB (root and home)
- HDD 500GB (mounted as a media and used only for file storage)
- LVM
- ext4
- eCryptfs on home partition

What I have done and the results:
- switch from firefox to chrome -> same symptoms but happen much later (I can continue to work for about 30 minutes but at the end the same thing happens)
- check the files that belong to those inodes -> most of them are cache in ~/.mozilla and ~/.cache/google-chrome. I delete them and restart. They come back and still cause the same problem.
- run Memtest -> no errors
- run fsck on the LVM volume groups (root and home) -> no errors
- run badblocks -svn on the LVM volume groups (so far only root because it takes a long time) -> no errors
- downgrade kernel from 4.15.3 to 4.15.1 -> problem still persists
- do nothing after booting up and logging in -> It does not crash. Everything looks normal until I start firefox.

My guesses for what may cause this:
- the SSD is dying
- file system corruption
- kernel bug

It would be really great if anyone can point out the root cause of the problem or what I might have missed.
If the SSD is dying, I'm ready to buy a new one. But I would like to confirm that it's really causing this.
Thanks a lot.

Re: "Valid eCryptfs headers not found" + high loadavg + system crash

If you install linux-lts as well does the kernel BUG appear until linux lts?
Edit:
Oh and welcome to the arch linux forums ttr.

Thanks for the quick reply and the warm welcome smile
I installed linux-lts and linux-lts-headers, restarted, and still get the same kernel BUG in dmesg.

Re: "Valid eCryptfs headers not found" + high loadavg + system crash

Would try http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#ecryptfs see if upstream ecryptfs think its device corruption or a kernel issue.
