frequent wifi errors in journal

I often get in my journal

kernel: wlp4s0: failed to remove key (1, ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) from hardware (-22)

which is sometimes accompanied by

I wonder whether the two wlp4s0 and iwlwifi errors are correlated, and what I should do to take care of them.

Re: frequent wifi errors in journal

kernel: iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.

Seems your microcode may be out of date?

dmesg | grep microcode

Re: frequent wifi errors in journal

Thanks, I looked at that thread, but it didn't help much. Here's the output of dmesg

dmesg | grep microcode
[ 0.000000] Intel Spectre v2 broken microcode detected; disabling Speculation Control
[ 0.382506] microcode: sig=0x406e3, pf=0x80, revision=0xc2
[ 0.382633] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.2.
[ 5653.568201] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0xc2, date = 2017-11-16

Re: frequent wifi errors in journal

I also see the first message when I disconnect from a wifi network but I don't see any other problems so I'd say it's safe to ignore for now. The rest is something you should inquire upstream and at the same time mention the message about now being able to remove the key.

One thing you could try is renaming the firmware file for your wifi card in /usr/lib/firmware/ and then reboot or reload the driver and see if it helps, if it does then this is definitely something you want to tell upstream when you inquire about this problem.

Re: frequent wifi errors in journal

Thanks, I'll try renaming it. By upstream, do you mean the kernel bug system?

Yes, exactly. You should check if the upstream kernel bugtracker is the correct place to report the problem or if it is a separate bug tracker or a mailing list.

Re: frequent wifi errors in journal

About the renaming part: in /usr/lib/firmware/ the relevant files are wil6210.fw and .brd, while in /lib/firmware/ there are many files of the form iwlwifi-nnnn-mm.ucode and similar: are you talking about the former or the latter? in the second case, being my card

04:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8260 (rev 3a)

the highest in the 8k series is iwlwifi-8265-34.ucode
Am I supposed to use this? from dmesg above it doesn't seem so, right?
Could that be the problem?
