shut down computer won't turn off power automatically.

Hi

in recent couple of days, when I choose "Power Off" or “ shutdown” command at the end of the day. the monitor goes into sleep. Systemd,my then stops there. power won't automatically turn off, the fan still running, the led on keyboard and mouse are still on.

I waited couple of update for the kernels, systemd and nvidia display drivers, but seems none of them fixed the issue. the hardware has never changed. No recent change in BIOS. Windows has no issue to turn itself off. I tried both lts and current kernel. both have the same issue.

No, windows shuts down properly. I never use fast boot for windows.

to verify the above claim. my Arch machine cannot restart, it will hang at the shutdown cycle. the monitor goes to power saver mode, the fans going, but never going to restart. it means something provent the proper shutdown.

It was no issue until recently.
I fresh installed arch and manjaro.

first time I installed Manjaro, everything is fine. but after I upgrade to the kernel to the latest lts version. I cannot shutdown my computer properly...

Windows uses fastboot by default - you do not have to activate it. Also it occasionally re-activates it on updates.
Since this messes with ACPI and that is, given the kernel properly shuts down and halts but the system simply doesn't power down, crucial, you should *ensure* it's not active.

Thank you for the info, however I don't think this related to the problem I have.

The windows fast boot is not active, since the first thing I do is to turn off hibernate when I fresh installed windows. and I never use sleep too.

I'm NOT running on a laptop, my machine is a workstation. I always make sure a clean start up every day. not to save couple second.

Seems both Arch and Manjaro have the same issue when I upgraded to the latest status... Both shutdown and restart doesn't work properly. The strange thing was 10 days ago, everything was smooth...
I'm downloading Ubuntu 16.04. I will report back if the older kernel will fix the issue

btw: I check the article you posted, and I can confirm windows fast boot is NOT active.

You can also try the lts kernel (to rue out userspace issues) and first "systemctl isolate multi-user.target" and from there "systemctl poweroff" (in case this fails from some GUI session only because of, well, GUI session ;-)

I tried both lts and latest kernel, no luck... I played with acpi = force, no luck

I tried Ubuntu 16.04. Everything worked out ok. Restart, shutdown with no issues...

I like rolling release, however I think I will stick with fixed release for a while for now.

Did you try powering off from the multi-user.target (since it's apparently not the kernel; also ACPI is loaded according to your dmesg)?

I actually did in comment #6 - be warned that isolating the multi-user.target will kill your GUI session, SAVE YOUR WORK BEFORE THIS!

I ran your command “systemctl multi-user.target” then monitor goes into sleep, this is exactly the same as I run “restart” or “shutdown” from GUI. Then the system stop there. Without prompt I don’t really know what to input or it is freeze already.

I tried Ubuntu 18.04, Manjaro, and Arch, when I installed the NVIDIA driver, This same problem happened.

My graphic card is nvidia quodra k2200

Any suggestion?

Thank you for quick reply,

I ran the exact command you posted which is "systemctl isolate multi-user.target", then my monitor go straight into sleep (power saving mode) with no other response... computer still running.

I tried to press Ctrl+ Alt + F2 or F3, nothing showing up.

I will try that and report back, but probably not in recent couple of days.

my assignment is due soon and i'm on ubuntu 16.04 with nvidia driver 384, not my preferred distro, but at least it is working now.

I tried the new nvidia display driver, no luck
so I replaced my video card from quadro K2200 to quadro P2000.
Now problem solved.

I think the issue is caused by the compatible issue between the display driver and quadro k2200.
