[Solved] Kernel issue?

Last night I installed updates and then later put the desktop to sleep.
Upon resume I was greeted by a mei_me error (data longer than ... 0000:16) I don't have the full details. Alt+Sysreq and RSEIUB did nothing. Strangely I found out that SSH was still an option and logged into the desktop. Issued the reboot command and got disconnected from the SSH but the desktop did not restart. Force reseted it.

Kernel boots but then goes into a blank screen. Ctrl+Alt+ 2... does not work. Adding nomodeset to the boot parameters gets me to a command line. Everything looks good.

Before trying nomodeset I even downgraded the kernel, nvidia drivers, systemd with no luck. Switching from gdm to lightdm did not work either. Below are the packages that were updated recently. Any ideas on what might be the culprit and what do downgrade?

After another restart it worked.
Since the previous post I did do another update and then also a fsck to the home directory.
Currently I am blacklisting
mei_me and me

Not sure what the fix was but nomodeset allowed me to fix things.
