[SOLVED] Random hard freezing in Arch Linux

Recently, Arch Linux started to freeze randomly (maybe not so randomly so: it also freezes when I run the "man" command). Initially, I considered the possibility of the culprit being Gnome, but it did not make much difference to install LXDE (any attempt to install Xfce failed).

DE: Gnome 3.26.2
Xorg Server: 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-1
Kernel: Linux 4.15.6-1
CPU (/proc/cpuinfo): Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3337U CPU @ 1.80GHz
CPU Flags (/proc/cpuinfo): fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx rdtscp lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good nopl xtopology nonstop_tsc cpuid aperfmperf pni pclmulqdq dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdcm pcid sse4_1 sse4_2 x2apic popcnt tsc_deadline_timer aes xsave avx f16c rdrand lahf_lm cpuid_fault epb pti tpr_shadow vnmi flexpriority ept vpid fsgsbase smep erms xsaveopt dtherm ida arat pln pts
CPU Bugs (/proc/cpuinfo): cpu_meltdown spectre_v1 spectre_v2

I tried installing LXDE in an attempt to find out if the problem is Gnome, but they both froze the same way. Switching to tty does not work. The Magic Keys also do not work. Is there anything I can try to solve this?

dmesg output:

Can you better define what does "recently" mean? Also, can you provide logs from your journal and your pacman log?

Running a short test:

# smartctl -t short /dev/sda

I got this result:

# smartctl -H /dev/sda

I'll try a conveyance and a long test.

You have provided 2 device names:

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

I suppose the correct command is "smartctl -a /dev/sda". This command returns:

Re: [SOLVED] Random hard freezing in Arch Linux

Look at

$ hdparm --read-sector ... # first make sure sector is actually bad
$ hdparm --write-sector ...# write zeros to fix / move / mark it

Fastest way I use to fix a bad sector. Sector number can be found from logs.

And then quickly take backup.

I commited a mistake when running the badblock utility, and run it in destructive mode. I've destroyed my partition >.<". But I have made backup of import files.

Anyway, for all other users with the same problem... Your HDD is probably dying. My HDD has 16000+ badblocks when I noticed these freezes.

The easiest way to solve this is reinstall your OS, deleting all previous partitions first. The new fresh install should mark all badblocks and will not use it. But maybe for a shortly time before your HDD finally die.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Don't bother! "Normal" behavior for modern HDD is to produce exponentially new bad locations if you continue using it. As a new bad locations produce contaminant that will produce new bad locations. A vicious circle.

The advise would be to get as much data you can extract before its last breath. Don't try to scan it more than required to realize it is failing, don't try to repair it by marking the bad blocks as suggested. As time pass the HDD will become more and more sluggish, then it will expire for good. I have a drive do it to me recently, I successfully extracted my data this way.
