Chromium slow, high GPU process usage

For the past several updates Chromium has been MASSIVELY slow visually, a good example being loading a YouTube video, the sound will start playing but the screen will be frozen for 5-6 seconds before the video starts playing.  Switching tabs and such can also trigger this slowness.

When I check the task manager (for Chromium), it's showing the GPU Process consuming 100% CPU, and if I just leave the browser alone with nothing playing, it still consumes 30-40% CPU.

I get no errors in the terminal when these freezes occur, the same is not happening to Chrome, and I have two different profiles for Chromium that have the exact same problem.  Even starting a with a fresh profile the problem shows up just going to YouTube, though it is slightly lessened, possibly due to the fewer tabs?

All packages up-to-date as of today, running AwesomeWM, with the proprietary Nvidia driver on a dual-socket Xeon system.
