xrandr - panning 16:9 on 4:3 (resolution too small)

Hallo,
i have a 1600x1200 display and i want to have a 1920x1080 desktop resolution (on native monitor resolution). The problem is the y-resolution is too small. Xrandr doesn't seem to allow panning when panning resolution (1920x1080) is smaller than the actual resolution (1600x1200). It probably needs a black border/dead area. Any ideas how this can be done with xrandr?

I've tried the following commands for panning. The two latter ones do work properly but are either not native (1600x1200) or not really 1920x1080. The first one is what i want to achieve. Unfortunately, not working.

xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --mode 1600x1200 --fb 1920x1200 --panning 1920x1080 (bad)
xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --mode 1600x1200 --fb 1920x1200 --panning 1920x1200 (ok)
xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --mode 1280x960 --fb 1920x1080 --panning 1920x1080 (ok)

Error:
