Paused, hanged during boot: a starting job with no time limit

I apologize for my subject description, but I don't know what my problem was.

When I turned up my PC it started to boot up, but it paused, hanged (?). All I remember of the message where it seemd to hang was something about a starting job and LVM2 mirrors. At the end of the line: (<seconds>/no limit. The 'no limit' part was a bit too long for me so I used Ctrl+Alt+del to reboot. When it started to boot again, I got stuck at the message telling me to press either F2 or del to enter the UEFI Bios menu. But pressing either key didn't a thing. I couldn't reboot from the console. Eventually after a hard shutdown I switched of my PC. Something must have gone terribly wrong. When I come back home I switched on the PC and now it booted without a problem.
Now I would like to know what happened? I probably should have waited for the boot process to finish, but the 'no limit' at the end of that message startled me.
