Help with VMware...C header files???

hi. im trying to install vmware...(VMware-player-1.0.1-19317.tar.gz)
at a certain point in the installation, i get this:
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] /usr/src/linux-2.6.17-ARCH/include

The kernel defined by this directory of header files does not have the same
address space size as your running kernel.

SO i try another and i get this:
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] /usr/include/linux

The header files in /usr/include are generally for C libraries, not for the
running kernel. If you do not have kernel header files in your /usr/src
directory, you probably do not have the kernel-source package installed. Are you
sure that /usr/include contains the header files associated with your running
kernel? [no]

could someone help me please? Also does this mean that ir is looking for the separate lot of C files that runs the kernel as opposed to other things? like what?
:?:

Re: Help with VMware...C header files???

Hi big_smile

Try the PKGBUILD from AUR it works good.

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php

How To:

Download the Tarball
Extract the Tarball
cd into the extracted directory
run "makepkg"
install with "pacman -A foo.pkg.tar.gz"

Have you tried to turn it off and on again?

It just looks the same. The aurbuild includes Petr's "any-any" patch, which is necessary for building the vmware modules for kernel 2.6.15+. It also creates the "vmware" group automatically (you have to put yourself there by hand, though, and re-login to make vmplayer work).
To my knowledge the aurbuild works just fine.

Re: Help with VMware...C header files???

Assuming that vmplayer is installed ....

Use AUR to install vmplayer

but you then need any any to set it up correctly

once you grab any any all you need to do is unpack it then enter created dir... then as root ./runme.pl should do the rest

Re: Help with VMware...C header files???

Yes, update 101 has been removed from Petr's server.

Simply edit the PKGBUILD and change 101 to 102, using the md5sum I gave at the AUR page of that package. I have tried that one, and it works fine:

Re: Help with VMware...C header files???

ok...this is what my PKGBUILD file says after the chmod line..i.e. where it diffrs from yours...not sure if i should #out the patches from gentoo. when i run make pkg, it says :
vmware-any-any-update102.tar.gz ... FAILED
==> ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check!
do i have to download the update? what do i do with it?

# patch -p0 <startdir>> $startdir/pkg/etc/vmware/locations
  echo "answer LIBDIR /opt/vmware/lib" >> $startdir/pkg/etc/vmware/locations
