System hangs by using external screen

Hello,

since the update from yesterday (Kernel 4.15.11 => 4.15.12) and Gnome (3.26-3.28) the system constantly hangs if i try to use the external screen.
There is no difference on boot with external screen or attatch it later. My setup is an Dell Latitude 7480 notebook with the latest firmware updates,
a Dell Dock WD15 which is attached on the USB Type-C Thunderbold 3 port on the notebook and a  LG 43UD79-B which is (should be) connected to the miniDP port of the dock.

EDIT: It seems to be a problem with gdm/wayland since gnome under Xorg ist working

I have the same problem with an external Dell screen. What "solved" it for me was the following:
- Installing xorg-xrandr
- Logging into an Xorg session, plugging in and configuring the screen (e.g. via Gnome settings)
- Logging out and logging back into a Wayland session the screen should now work

I'm not 100% sure xrandr is necessary, but I installed it since the errors suggested so. Also, when booting with the screen plugged in, the system still freezes. I'm not sure how to resolve that and it might be worth opening a bug report.

Can you try my suggestion? Possibly first without installing xrandr to see if it's necessary.

Sort of. If monitor is plugged in at boot I get frozen gdm background on laptop screen, boot messages on external screen. I can SSH in from another box and restart gdm to no effect. Disconnect external monitor, restart gdm from SSH session and then I can log into either X or Wayland, doesn't matter which and everything works. Plug in external monitor and everything works until reboot. I already had xrandr installed, but I think that is a red herring.
