Playback skipping in Spotify

Errors for both the web client (firefox: "open.spotify.com") and the standalone client from AUR: spotify-stable 1.0.72.117-3, are absent in the output of journalctl.  However, playback skips badly no matter if I use firefox or the standalone client.  This does not seem to be a latency issue:

Playback of local audio files does not skip.  All of this suggests that this is an issue with the spotify data api, but I don't have any issues with skipping on other platforms (eg OSX and Android), so maybe there is yet another layer of abstraction that I'm missing.  Has anyone else had this issue?
