I have an asus a8n-sli motherboard, and use the inbuilt sound hardware to listen to my music.
#hwd -s
ALSA(sound): nVidia Corporation|CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller module: snd-intel8x0
However,
# aplay musicfile.wav
ALSA lib confmisc.c:670:(snd_func_card_driver) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:391:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1070:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3947:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2146:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
aplay: main:547: audio open error: No such device
Any other sound devices also come up with errors. I've followed the (very helpful) ArchWiki article, googled, and come up with nothing. So, it looks like the modules and everything are loaded, but... nothing seems to detect the soundcard. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
I have exactly the same Problem, with an Intel AD1981HD, it seems that alsa is broken with Kernel 2.6.17, with 2.6.16 I have no Problems
Have you tried to turn it off and on again?

I can confirm this issue with Kernel 2.6.17 and a SoundBlaster CA0106. However, instead of going back to 2.6.16, I have compiled alsa-driver 1.0.12rc1 and sound works.
