==> ERROR: A failure occurred in package_linux-git().
Aborting...
The cause being the call make kernelrelease generating 4.16.0-git-dirty instead of 4.16.0-git
This issue seems to be caused by fakeroot interacting with https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … =v4.16#n77
git diff-index --name-only HEAD
run without fakeroot no output on a clean tree with fakeroot every file is listed.
I can work around the issue but would like to understand the cause.

Interesting! I found this, which actually discusses the exact issue of linux.git
https://public-inbox.org/git/a770d158-c … racle.com/
So, this is apparently a kernel bug and the git maintainers would like Linus to know that he's using the command wrong.

Hi, this had bothered me too. I finally got around to fixing it, commit merged yesterday: https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/6147b … fb30aa2349 . Just thought I'd update.
