Hi

I wish to run Xfce4 how do I start it....from Kdm ?

Edit your /home/(name)/.xinitrc file and add a line like this to it.

exec startxfce4

Make sure you comment out the other option in there. Then type startx or startxfce4. One of those should work for ya.

Can I run xfce without KDE or Gnome?

You do not need KDE or gnome to run xfce4. I do not use a graghical log in for xfce4 or do not know if there is one for it.
Maybe someone else can help with that if there is a way.

If you really need a graphical login for xfce4 and don't want to use kdm or gdm, there's still xdm which is not related to either gnome or kde. Though xdm is by far not as much eye-candy as gdm/kdm, at least when I ran it. No idea how configurable it is, didn't feel like messing around with it, just went back to console login.

Looks 8) xdm no a bad idea....I just feel KDE & Gnome are heavy for what I use (net &email)

Gnome 2.4 I have no luck with .....KDE too much

You can add stuff to the list of windowmanagers kdm likes by opening the kde control center, going to System-Administration/Login Manager, and clicking administrative mode. One of the tabs allows you to add commands to the list of window managers.

Yes go to login manager....sessions...add...Xfce4...bingo you can pick what session you want KDE Gnome...Xfce4 8) etc..

Before removing gnome and kde ensure you are not using any apllication for kde and gnome.
i.e. if for the e-mail you use kmail (kde) or balsa (gnome) you still need kde and gnome lib. It is the same for many other application. If you do not have space problem on the hd it is not a bad idea have kde and gnome around and use xfce as desktop. Having them installed but not using them do ot affect the speed of the system but alow you to use their application if you need them.

Yes I figure that leaving them in I can have the best of everything....Xfce4 is fast....but KDE has all the apps & power

No KDE can stay for a while

Not so sure about Gnome...its used to be my favorite but 2.4 never seems stable to me...(well maybe its just me )

I have KDE 3.2...and it looks great but I can't find the Tab Sessions in KDE Control -> System -> login Manager

i wanted to add xfce4 to the kdm (this starts auto). i looked at kdmrc but i don't know how and where to add manually.

Never mind...i was the guest and kdm simply recognized it by itself after a reboot
