[SOLVED] Is there any solution for nvidia 396 screen tearring?

Hello Everyone,

After fresh instalation and struggling with not working Xorg: see my topic and solution and installation details - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=236922
I experienced awful screen tearing. Following the instruction on ArchWiki to solve the issue was unsuccessful. I read posts that present driver version 390xx is - gentle saying- bugy and to get rid of this tearing it needs to be installed driver 384 or 387 version. I installed linux-lts so if anyone could guide me how to install 384 or 387 driver I would be greatfull. I was trying use 'downgrade' but there is only 340xx beside 390xx however in my last topic (see link provided above) this version of the driver does not work for me.

The post that mentioned that 390xx were buggy are with old versions of 390xx (the xx are bugfix/patch revisions, you can't just ignore them if one talks about driver stability), there's no issues with the recent versions, downgrading is a much more involved ordeal.  Also there's no reason for you to use them, your card is supported by the latest nvidia  package. (the nvidia package is the newest driver, it's at 396 currently)

Post about your actual issue, instead of a misguided attempt at downgrading to unsupported software versions. There are many ways to fix tearing depending on your environment, give information about that. Which deskop/window manager/graphical setup are you using? In which applications do you notice the tearing?

First of all I would like to mention that I have installed the newest 396 driver but this did not channge anything. I am on Openbox without any of compositing manager such as compton.

Openbox based on Arch installed followed instructions on ArchWiki.

the problem which I cannot solve is that whenever I follow instructions provided on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … leshooting
in section 'Avoid screen tearing' when I logout and trying to login the system freezes on default view of gray screen and nothing works until I remove from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf the line where it seays "Option         "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceCompositionPipeline=On, ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}". Then system wakes up but there is obviously  screen tearing issue. This appears on the web browsers when most of the page is a text. Scrolling down or up causes in the middle of the screen something like flickering the one or two lines.

Can you still switch to a TTY when the freeze happens? Can you post a Xorg and journal log of a freezing session?

I don't see anything obviously wrong here I'm afraid, might be an interplay with xorg 1.20. In general you are usually better advised with using a standalone compositor like compton, as using CompositionPipeline is detrimental to general performance (as you have to composite the whole screen all the time, as opposed to a dedicated compositor that has knowledge of the windows you actually have available).

I will look on ArchWiki compton and its setting according CompositionPipeline.
For now I did dirty trick and put in my autostart file line like this:

nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceCompositionPipeline=On, ForceFullCompositionPipeline = on}" &

Wait so that alone works just the xorg configuration doesn't? What if you keep the configuration  and omit the non essential TripleBuffer and IndirectGLX directives? But if it works like that that might be a suitable workaround

This looks exactly like this. I am experiencing screen tearing. When I follow instructions as I mentioned from Wiki then there is no more screen tearring but if I logout and want to login again then system freezes until I will remove the section with compositionpipline and reboot or logout the system. Give me a minute and I will check the settings omitting TrippleBuffer and IndirectGLX.

I can login and there is no any more a screen tearring.
I removed line with pipelinecompositing from my autostart.
My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20- nvidia.conf looks like this:

FWIW ForceFullCompositionPipeline causes microstutter in games. The FPS counter says 60 but it feels jerky still. __GL_YIELD=ULSEEP is a much better solution. For KDE use KWIN_TRIPLE_BUFFER.

USLEEP will not prevent tearing if one isn't already using a compositor and even then it's specific as to how that compositor is implemented. AFAIK it was only ever relevant on KWin, which isn't the point of discussion here.

Or maybe it has to do with how the compositor is configured? I'm currently using backend="xrender" and vsync="none" with Compton instead of GLX + OpenGL.

About how I tested it for micro-stutter, I tried a game named "Guacamelee" which is a metroidvania style game. It has 2D vector style graphics where I can easily see if the side-scrolling is smooth or not. Whenever I tried ForceFullCompositionPipeline in the past, the scrolling animation wasn't smooth, but right now it is fine.

They did do a lot of work on that in the 390 series iirc, so it might have improved, however I'd argue that something as lightweight as Guacamelee might not be entirely representative of what happens under more demanding circumstances.

But what you most definitely shouldn't do is layering compositors, so if you opt for the composition pipeline you should disable any other compositor like you've done.

I last tried a couple of weeks ago when the 396 driver was release. Likely there is more at play than just `ForceFullCompositionPipeline` but in every game I tried, WoW, Skyrim, F1 2017 it didn't feel smooth with it on. Although it fixes tearing, the microstutter is rather more annoying to  me.
