Touchpad misbehaving on shutdown when screen disblaed

Really odd combination of problems and consequences.

If I wait for my screen to go to standby or put it to sleep with

xset dpms force standby

And I then press the power button on the laptop (acpi shutdown I assume) then the screen will rapidly spam

(EE) DLL0665:01 06CB:76AD Touchpad: Read error 19

If I do nothing this keeps on indefinitely. It stops and shuts down when I randomly smash the keys and keyboard...

How do I fix this? I couldn't find anything on this error.

Using the modesetting driver
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet intel_iommu=off"
All packages up to date
The problem has been around for 6 months, previously to that it worked fine.
