Re: Openbox Archie

Pcmanfm has no plugins system, seems to have problems with selecting the icons to use (and doesn't use the ones specified in your .gtkrc-2.0 file roll ), only recently had some stability problems fixed, requires FAM to be running or will crash on start (though that might not be an issue, see below), and generally is capable of less than Thunar is, while being no faster... It's a file manager that I think might become very good, and I am following its development, but right now seems a bit early.

BTW, do you guys think it would be good to use gamin instead of FAM in this? As of right now neither is maintained, but FAM seems decidedly the buggier of the two. On the other hand gamin doesn't work with NFS volumes, not sure how much of a showstopper that would be.

Well for me I only want a filemanager, nothing more. But I agree with you with all the other things.

Re: Openbox Archie

I think dtw has started a flame war ... lol

Put fm & editor to a vote maybe

Its not that hard to build a OB-Archie using mklivesiso.....

We need the engine working first before adding bodykit  :?

Re: Openbox Archie

Dude, you started your own flamewar - thunar is obviously the most popular choice but, as you said, it's very easy to edit Archie to add anything you want smile

Re: Openbox Archie

I don't know whether I should prepare to duck, but how about gaim for
irc?  And what's wrong with rox?  Serious question.  I like rox, and
other's don't, but why?

Re: Openbox Archie

i like rox too and use it everyday but it is severly limited as an actual filemanager sometimes.

I never found much use for thunar TBH - the drag and drop support is shite - but it looks nice!

Re: Openbox Archie

Why not have a module system like SLAX have. If you like ROX-Filer or maybe you think centerirq is much better than Gaim, you can add it?

EDIT: On the other hand... It was really bad with SLAX, and I never really got many "modules" working.

Re: Openbox Archie

thats kinda what mkliveiso allows you to do...

we just need a OB based package list which you could then change to how you want

Sod it no fm just use xterm thats that! rofl

ROX is not only limited, it's ugly, inelegent, and unintuitive, IMHO.

Re: Openbox Archie

OK - I created a repo called obarchie that contains all the extra pkgs needed to build the iso.  They are built from the AUR so if their broken blame the maintainers.

The current version of archie-scripts doesn't support this stuff  so I'll provide a detailed howto on how to get the CVS files and build your own openbox iso - this is MUCH quicker than me building and uploading and ISO, which may be completely screwed.

Please remember that you are helping to _test_ Archie - and that's the main aim of this exercise.  Of course the openbox module will be improved as a result though!

The repo is here:

http://dtw.jiwe.org/pkgs/obarchie

You'll need to add that to pacman for starters

Howto will be on Archie website - will write and post it later and will be in IRC for support smile

Re: Openbox Archie

OK - howto is here.  If you haven't been using Arch for more than six months think carefully before trying it!  I will be in #archie for help.  If in doubt stop!  Will be AFK a bit but am around!

If it fucks up your system I apologise sincerely!

<strong>UPDATE</strong>
You'll need to be using a unionfs enabled kernel!  Use beyond with beyond-unionfs pkg!  Unionfs checking in script is flaky!  Be warned!

Re: Openbox Archie

OK - it works perfectly and very quickly - i was thrown by the black background on startup!

If someone can help me set up a default config to go in archie-openbox-customizations it will be ready.  I still need testers though!

Re: Openbox Archie

OK - we got it. smile

You need testers - I'm just config'ing my Archie machine to run this. Relax, and all will be well.

FYI - I won't be helping with the default config - not because I don't want to, it's just that I've never used OB.

With a bit of luck, my next post in this thread will be from the Archie OB Test Live CD. Watch this space ....... big_smile

To avoid possible confusion, the required package is called unionfs-beyond, and it's in [extra].
