xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

After I ugpraded to `xord-xdm 1.1.11-7`, I rebooted. Everything works great for a minute. I don't see any issues. Then, systemd kills XDM, and it falls back to a console.

May 31 15:59:15 Lithium systemd-timesyncd[552]: Synchronized to time server [2001:738:0:401:80:c106:de2f:123]:123 (2.arch.pool.ntp.org).

I'm not sure if this is related or not, but it appears a little later in the journal:

May 31 16:01:25 Lithium login[1805]: pam_systemd(login:session): Failed to release session: Connection reset by peer
May 31 16:01:25 Lithium systemd-logind[556]: Failed to abandon session scope, ignoring: Transport endpoint is not connected

I don't post very much, so appologies if I've missed something.

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

Release 7 was supposed to only regenerate BUILDINFO https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … 9b28922678
Perhaps an unknown difference in the build environment between releases 6 and 7 caused the issue.  Is there a coredump?

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

I use the xdm-archlinux package with its service enabled instead of the xdm one. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

I didn't see any core dump messages in the journal; not sure where else to look. XDM did work, but for some reason the systemd didn't see it running and killed it.

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

Same timeout message here. Three machines with either xdm or xdm-archlinux.
I don't have the "pam_systemd(login:session): Failed to release session: Connection reset by peer" log line though.
I don't see any other relevant log errors.

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

that would make since as xdm hadn't been repackaged/released to the repos since like 2015. so an actual package and release of new binaries caught things that something like systemd did a while ago (years).

If someone affected could test my proposed fix and open a bug report on the arch bug tracker.

loqs wrote:

I had to install xorg-util-macros and  xtrans as make depends, but it built/installed okay and seems to have done the trick big_smile

It's been over 15 minutes since I booted with your patched xorg-xdm, and I would have expected it to crash within the first minute or so.

I need to do some shopping, but I will leave my laptop running while I am out to make sure. If there are any problems I will get back to you.

Thanks
Irvine

Edit:
A piece of advice to anyone testing the patch: Since it will be overwritten,  I would backup the official /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-xdm-1.1.11-7-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz before installing the patched version. It doesn't work anyway, so its not likely to make a great difference, but,....you never know,...   you just might need it?

Edit2
It's been over an hour and half now and everything seems to working without problems. I have added a bug report and linked to your patch as a proposed solution.

I'm trying @loqs patch, but I am having another issue to build the package...

I am getting:

Install devtools and run extra-x86_64-build instead of makepkg.

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

I just rebuilt the package without any issues. I am guessing here, but could it be something to do with cc1: some warnings being treated as errors?

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

@IrvineHimself, you pointed me an alternate solution, I modified the PKGBUILD and add ./configure option --disable-selective-werror. It worked

@loqs, it's like you knew exactly what I was doing ! This solution worked well without additional modifications to PKGBUILD, so I am sticking to it.

Thanks !

Re: xorg-xdm 1.1.11-7 terminated by systemd after starting

Hi. I had the same timeout error with xdm.service. I rebuilt xorg-xdm with @loqs patch and now it works properly. Thanks.
Do we need to create task in the bugtracker to request package update?
