Thin/illegible fonts in X apps

For a while now, the fonts in many of my x-apps have looked thin and virtually illegible. This goes for programs like xman, editres, xload, and - funny enough - xfontsel,  but not xmag, xclock, xcalc. The screenshot is from xfontsel, and shows the thin fonts in the menu.

Does anyone know where I should look to fix this? Xresources? or some fonts.conf setting? Or is it even more esoteric?
