GTK Scaling Settings Without Gnome

I am trying to setup a Latitude E7470 laptop with a HIDPI display in i3 (just i3 and startx). The problem is that GTK apps wont scale. I have set the dpi in .xinitrc however this only scales the i3 UI not any aplications. Acroding to the arch wiki, most apps that Im intrested in (specificaly Firefox and Chrome) are basing their scaling off of GTK settings. GTK and gnome is notorious (at least in my eyes) for ignoring xorg wherever possible. So how do I make gtk pull the dpi from xorg, or at least set the scale factor with some environment variables.

I suggest you read that entire page, should the linked section not suffice (i.e. there's a chance that the gsettings options mentioned for gnome specifically are also more generally parsed by GTK)
