[SOLVED]Laptop freezes at startup since bumblebee's service is enabled

Hi there!

I just reinstalled Arch on my laptop and once I enable bumblebee's service with

# systemctl enable bumblebeed

my laptop freezes at startup but it works correctly before enabling bumblebeed service. I can't check any logs or something else because once I enable bumblebeed service I can't access to that partition even with chroot. I've tried to mount the partition using Archlinux CD to access with chroot and disable the service but I get the following message when I try to mount it:

I've tried to reinstall Arch several times but I get the same result and I'd like to use bumblebee.

I had bumblebee installed and I was able to use it in my previous installation but I don't know what to do to make it work now.


My laptop is an Asus ROG Strix gl553vd with Intel Core i7 7700HQ, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 4 GB. I have (or have... to be more concrete...) a dual boot system with Windows 10 installed on the SSD and Arch on the HDD.

I don't remember having these problems when I installed Arch at first time in this laptop, so I can't understand these issues.

As a temporary solution I've installed Arch again but this time I haven't enabled bumblebee daemon at the startup, instead I'm running

systemctl start bumblebeed

when I need to use my NVIDIA graphic card.

Does anyone know why bumblebee daemon freezes the system at startup? I'm reading about nvidia-xrun and I wonder if it is a good alternative to bumblebee, someone has tried it?

Ok, to diagnose the problem we need some logs from a failed boot. I understand that enabling bumblebee prevents your computer from starting normally anymore, which makes recovering those logs more difficult. So here is what you can do :

- In your bootloader, add a boot option with the kernel parameter systemd.unit=multi-user.target
- Enable bumblebeed at startup.
- Restart your computer, it should freeze at startup.
- Force restart your computer and boot using the boot option defined above
- You will be dropped to a TTY, at a specific runlevel which is before the bumblebee service is started.
- Login, save the last Xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) somewhere, and disable bumblebee
- Restart normally and paste the saved Xorg log here. Also paste the output of journalctl -b-1 (log from previous boot)

Thank you! sorry for the delay, I just tried to do it I could access via arch-chroot from the ISO this time to copy those files and disable bumblebee daemon.

I see nothing wrong in the logs. In fact, the X server exits successfully, which is surprising. Just to be clear, what can of "freeze" are you experiencing ? Is it a black screen instead of X starting up ? Are you able to switch to a TTY ?

When my laptop is starting it "freezes" during the white text on the console, before loading X server. I can't even switch to a TTY, the laptop stay freeze and the laptop fan start to sound fast and loud.
I'll try those steps you said me again to check if I've done something wrong and those logs are from the previous boot before enable bumblebee daemon.

Hello,

I am having a similar problem on my Asus GL502VT.
I tried installing bumblebee following the installation guide on the Wiki.
As I am using the LTS kernel, I installed the following packages:  nvidia-lts, mesa, bumblebee, bbswitch-dkms.
I then enabled bumblebeed.service, and rebooted.
When I simply reboot, the system "freezes" just after printing some usual text messages: no pixel on the screen changes, I can't switch to other tty's using Ctrl-Alt-Fx, and when I start pressing the power button to force shutdown, the fans start spinning at maximum speed.
I managed to boot by modifying /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf: I replaced:

PMMethod=auto

With:

PMMethod=none

So on my side, the issue seems to occur when bbswitch tries to turn off the dedicated graphics card.
To test that hypothesis, I tried to torn off the card manually after booting, using:

$ sudo tee /proc/acpi/bbswitch <<<OFF

This did not do anything, as the nvidia driver was, for some reason, running.
I thus blacklisted nvidia by writing:

install nvidia /bin/false

In an newly created /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, as explained in this Wiki page.
The system booted normally, and when I executed:

$ sudo tee /proc/acpi/bbswitch <<<OFF

After a few seconds the mouse pointer disappeared, the fans started spinning at max speed, and the computer became unresponsive.
I first suspected that it was my fault because I used the LTS kernel and may have used a package designed for the regular Linux kernel, so I did the same thing using the Linux kernel, replacing nvidia-lts and bbswitch-dkms by nvidia and bbswitch.
I then did the same things I explained previously and got the same result.

Dear surrealistic, can you confirm or refute that we are having the same issue?
If so, I will post my logs using Askannz's method.

I'm sorry I couldn't reply before! I think that we are having a similar issue but in my case I'm not using the LTS kernel, what I'm doing now is to just enable bumblebee once I need to run it.

I want to repeat those steps Askannz said before so I hope to do it in the coming days.

I am also sorry I could not keep this thread alive!
Good news on my side, I found a fix:

I enabled bbswitch and modified a line in /etc/default/grub from this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

To:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2009'"

And Arch boots normally and the discrete video card is off!

I found this fix by looking here.
Basically, for technical reasons explained in the link, some laptop models need a trick like that to make bbswitch work.
My laptop was not on the list, so I picked the fix used from another ROG laptop. If it does not work for you, try all the variants.
Also, you may have other options in the variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, so just append

 acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2009'

at the end of whatever string is already there on your laptop.

Hi there!

I'm so sorry! I couldn't write you back before!

I had to do a clean install a couple of days before since I had an issue that was corrupting my ext4 partition, and I really don't know why but I can enable bumblebee without getting stuck on startup.

I really appreciate your help and your last message since that's reminded me those options helped me before to use bumblebee/nvidia drivers properly on my last company laptop (I installed Manjaro in that laptop and it was an ASUS similar to my current one).

I forgot those options completely! I'm pretty sure it'd have helped me with my previous installation. I really don't know why it's working properly now, though.

I'll mark the thread as solved and I hope this thread can help other users with the same issue.
