Hi
I have looked at other existing threads and none of them that I've found seem to quite have the same issue as me.
I have a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop. I have a problem when connecting a particular screen to the laptop via HDMI (uses a DVI to HDMI cable). Sometimes when I connect it, it just displays black. Both the laptop and the monitor detect they're connected.
I use this laptop at work with a different monitor also via HDMI (pure HDMI) and it has never had this problem. To fix this I have to restart the laptop, which is very annoying as all my stuff is setup and running.
I only use the intel integrated graphics. It has nvidia graphics but dealing with that is too much of a pain on Linux and I don't need it on this laptop so after trying for a short time to setup duel graphics when I first got the laptop I just gave up (I never actually game or anything on this laptop).

It would really be great if I can solve this issue so I don't have to restart just to get a monitor working.
Let me know if any other info might be useful

Just to check that I have understood correctly, do you mean that the external monitor remains black but the laptop's screen remains active? And this only happens with one particular external monitor?
Does it make a difference if you deactivate the external monitor via xrandr before connecting it?
After a failed connection, can you reconnect to another external monitor?
Are there any error messages in dmesg?
Have you tried changing the cables? Maybe there is a loose connection. Does it always work when you reboot, without moving anything?

Hi Xyne, thanks for replying
Yes the external monitor remains black, the laptop's screen remains active and never has a problem. I've only got 2 external screens to test with. One at work and one at home. The one at home is the one I'm having trouble with.
After a failed connection I can't really test connecting to another external monitor as that would mean going to work again unfortunately. However rebooting to make it work at home and going to work the next day, the monitor at work has never had this problem. I also currently don't have other cables to try, but it always works when rebooting, without moving anything.
There are no errors in dmesg after a failed connection.
After a failed connection, deactivating the external monitor with xrandr --output HDMI-1 --off, turning it on again with xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto made it work without rebooting which is progress .
Do you know which other logs I can check? Or other diagnostics I can do? I can make this work with xrandr, but would really like to try find out why this happens to make it work 100% correctly.

You can check the output of journalctl and the Xorg log under /var/log. If the connections are managed automatically, e.g. by a DE or WM, check the manager's logs too.
Try wiggling the cable when the monitor is correctly connected to see if there is a loose connection. Bring it to work and test it with another monitor if you can. Even if it's a hassle, it may save you hours of futile debugging and frustration.
Beyond that, keep tinkering and searching online for related connection problems with your specific graphics chip and driver, the monitor model, the cable setup, etc. If you have created Xorg configuration files under /etc/X11, check that they are necessary and correct. Check if there is anything that you can remove or add. Double-check that the graphics card is disabled and not interfering with anything. Reconsider taking the time to set it up properly (as the default driver, or via bumblebee).
Resolving graphics errors often feels like a journey into an overgrown jungle in the age of exploration with nothing but a machete and some vague idea of direction. You might find the long-lost temple if you're lucky or persistent enough, but you might come back empty-handed with dysentery. Good luck.
