Nouveau driver yields horrible performance/GT 1030 [solved]

I have a GT 1030 and using the propitiatory nvidia drivers, it is very smooth for normal desktop stuff (no gaming).  I removed the propitiatory drivers and am trying out the open source nouveau in the kernel and with xf86-video-nouveau but the performance is down right horrible.  Simple moving my chromium window left or right on the desktop is choppy.  I do have the mesa package installed per the wiki suggestion.  What else is needed to get this running smoothly?  Other tuneables or the like?

I have the GTX 1050, and the performance with nouveau is terrible for me as well. Not just in Arch, but on every other distro I've tried nouveau with the 1050 in. When I first got the 1050 last summer (2017) the nouveau drivers would only run Cinnamon in software rendering mode. Things have improved a lot since then, but still is no where near the performance of the Nvidia drivers, so I just use the Nvidia ones. I know of
no way to get the nouveau drivers to perform better, but someone else might, on here, or on other Linux tech discussions. I wish you luck!

It seems to have become better, but reclocking is still not possible. Nouveau can run the 1030 only with the slowest clock.

Thanks for the link.  Nvidia never ceases to amaze... release partial functionality   Guess I'm stuck on the proprietary drivers.
