New to Arch, couple of questions

Hey i'm new to Arch and have a couple of questions.
Do u have a installation handbook like gentoo ?
Not quite sure what to download, i have a pentium 4 with 1 gig ddr, nvidia geforce fx5200 system.
I tried Gentoo and Ubuntu before, great distro's but it's not what i'm looking for.
So hopefully i find that in Arch hehe ^^

Thanks in advance!

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Alson if you'd like a complete system with X.org you should download arch iso and not arch-base iso, if that is what I understand is one of your questions.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Thanks for the reply's!
Downloaded the iso, installed everything.. only got 1 problem so far.
After i reboot my pc i get grub error 15.
I have WinXP on hda and linux on hdb, installed the grub on hdb.
Anyone know how to solve this problem ?

EDIT: ok so i thought; maybe i have to edit my grub config.
so at the boot screen i typed the command to boot into my system but got kernel panic and it said it was unable to mount fs root.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Check that your fstab is correct and in the grub line that root= is pointing to the partition on the harddrive that has the root partition.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

"This error is returned if the specified file name cannot be found, but everything else (like the disk/partition info) is OK. Frequently, the error notes a missing kernel image file. Make sure that the file it is referring to exists on your boot partition."

Is always a good choice to install grub on /dev/hda and configure it to boot windows and Linux.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Thanks for the tip, got both grub and kernel working perfectly now.
Only thing not working is my internet i think, doing ping google.com but can't find the host.
So have to find out how to get that working, getting no errors.. it says "done" when it loads eth1.
I didn't change config as it was working (i use dhcp) while installing Arch.
Also tried pacman -S kde but that didn't work, maybe i' m doing something wrong there, don't know all the commands from Arch yet hehe.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

in /etc/modprobe.conf write:
alias eth0 kernelmodule
When I used Arch I needed to write "alias eth0 8139too". So you need to write the kernel module for your ethernet card assuming it is ethernet. And that the device is eth0. Hope I help. wink

Hehe ya i got it working already after doing ifconfig eth0 up and dhcpcd eth0.
But i assume adding it to /etc/modprobe.conf will autoload it ?
One more thing and then i' ll stop asking so much  big_smile
I'm getting Xorg atm (did pacman -S xorg).. after it complete i only have to run Xorg -configure ? (assuming it's the same command as in the other distro's i used?) or will i have to add things manually too ?
Cause Xorg is my main concern, i ALWAYS get problems when trying to install it lol. It either tells me mouse cannot be found, using logitech optical mini mouse usb. Or that no screens can be found..
My vid card is a geforce fx5200. Never got TwinView working.
However, i did manage to get compiz and xgl working last night on my other linux box ^^.

I usually do it the other way around - since arch updates so fast, the CD is usually out-of-date, so I download minimal and do an FTP install (instead of downloading big iso, installing, re-downloading all the packages). But I guess it's a bit late to say that now ^^,

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Ok, i dunno anymore what to do atm.
eth1 turned out to be the one for getting internet connection.
So what i did is, alias eth1 "driver", rebooted computer.. but at "network settings" it enables eth0 whole the time and disables eth1, if i try to either enable or disable them i get an error and have to do it manually(it says).
So the only way for me to get internet working atm is to open kconsol and type > ifconfig eth1 up > dhcpcd eth1.
How do i fix this ?

Heheh ya ur help was great!
Even tho Arch is still a little complicated to me, i really like it.. like it more than any other distro i tried before.
It gives me a more "satisfied" feeling when i get things working instead of running a distro where everything is done for u already.
Only problems i'm running into right now is the internet thingy and can't get sound to work.. followed alsa howto but yet it doesn't want to work.
All other things are working so far so i' m quite happy ^^

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

# pacman -S alsa-utils
# alsamixer
Set volumes there and ESC to quit alsamixer
# alsactl store
# nano -w /etc/rc.conf
Add alsa in the list of startup scripts where, net netfs cron etc. are stored

About the internet problem read the link snowman gave you. wink

I checked the link only didn't quite understand how to use the commands exactly lol. So i'll look more into it once i get home.
Guess i've been trying to hard to fix the internet, deleted something from my rc.conf and added a command like: eth0="dhcp" but now kdm doesn't start anymore tongue

edit:

# Always load "8139too" before "e100"
MODULES=(8139too e100)

Like this one, what do i replace the commented text with ?eth0 and eth1 ?
Also, the commands u gave me for installing alsa, i already used.. didn't help for me sad

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Anyone knows how to fix the kdm error ?
One of the errors i'm getting when typing startx in console or let it run(normally it starts kdm) is that xterm cannot be found.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

I don't think it's possible to start kdm with startx. Most people either start kdm automatically:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDM
or they put:
exec startkde
in their .xinitrc to start kde  with startx.

To fix the xterm problem, install it:
pacman -S xterm
You're getting this error because you're using the default .xinitrc which tries to start an xterm.

Thanks for the reply, but since i hadn't a lot installed yet i decided to do a fresh reinstall which WORKED lol.
Editted my network settings and my internet is working at star tup now.
Only damn thing i can't get to work is my sound, tried just about everything..  sad

EDIT: just noticed something..
when i run alsaconf i pick the audigy one from the list, when everything is done i run alsamixer but iits showing me the SIS SI7012 one.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Maybe the -c option of alsamixer could help you

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

Well... It's because your audio cards were probably autodetected and setup by udev, and the one you didn't want was setup first. The first soundcard to be initialized is usually used as the default sound device.

Run "lshwd -cc" to find out what modules the different sound cards use.

Then you can either make sure that the one you want to be the default soundcard is loaded first, or if you don't need 2 you can disable the other one completely by putting the module in /etc/rc.conf under MOD_BLACKLIST or something like that.

In case method 1 doesn't work, as the case was with a buddy of mine, you can create scripts in /etc/rc.d to load the soundcard modules and put them in /etc/rc.conf.

This would enable you to decide what soundcard to change volume of, but it won't change what soundcard is the default soundcard if that's the issue.

Re: New to Arch, couple of questions

That's right. Black listing the module is the best way if you don't need both cards.

In the case you need both cards, with the defauld on audigy, blacklist them and then load them in the order you want (actually like it is done in the wiki about the conflicts between network connections)
