Evolution: Error while fetching mail. Timeout was reached.

I am running GNOME Version 3.28.2, with Evolution 3.28.4, all packages are up to date. Since two days Evolution is unable to fetch or send mail. I get the following error message:

Error while Fetching mail from “Mail”.
Timeout was reached

My settings are unchanged. The service I use for email is responsive.

Running e.g.

CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution >& ~/evo_debug.log

leaves me with a 900 row strong log file, without "timeout" errors.

Does anyone have suggestions, what I should look for/what I can do to identify the root problem?
