Firefox and panextff.cool

Suddenly, I'm getting popups from this, obviously fake domain. The only time I've noticed it is when on the BBC news website, which suggests that it may be a code injection. I see nothing in FF settings that suggests anything has been inadvertently added, but it's a pain inasmuch as the only way to be rid of it is to kill FF.

As a workaround (not fully tested if it actually works, yet) I've installed dnsmasq and set it up to redirect to 127.0.0.1.

Google search only takes me to Windows solutions, and so I'd like to know is there a chance that something nasty has got in, and is there a better solution that dnsmasq?
