mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Since I switched to kernel 2.6.1, I can no longer mount floppys.

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/floppy/0,
or too many mounted file systems

I thought some filesystems might be compiled wrong, or the fstab is not OK, but I can't find any mistake.

If some prof could have a look, I am sorry for the long quotes.

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Hm. Must be something magic. I have another PC running arch. It is rarely updated, and hardly tweaked. I wanted to compare it with my other station, as the error wasn't on this one. But guess what, now the both machines have mounting errors. Both on kernel 2.6.1. Any idea?

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

I found out, switching back to kernel 2.4.24 will make my floppy be mountable again. Therefore, the problem must be either my kernel config, or  some parts of arch don't fit kernel 2.6.1.

Hints, Aid, what ever.

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

one this should be n the Kernel section of the forum.

two if you think this is a bug restricted to arch then file a bug report so that it is fixed for all.....even those arch users who do not come to the forum.

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

We where not sure if it was a bug or a kernel thing, in the beginning of the thread it was not clear at all. It figures out to be one, as we both have same issues on several machines.

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Could also be fstab, maybe vfat has changed.
I saw in a terminal some message complaining about "unhide", so I deleted this entry. Now the fstab string for floppy reads:

/dev/floppy/0          /mnt/fl        vfat,ext2         user,auto 0 0

and at least sxt2 will mount. I am still on it.

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

I have same problem and also fixed on /etc/fstab.  In my system I was using  udev and since I do not use ext2 floppies I changed the /etc/fstab line to:

/dev/floppy/0 /mnt/fl vfat rw,sync.user,noauto 0 0

And create a /etc/udev/permissions.d/00-myrules.permision which include many lines from udev.permision, but with users group access, like this modified line on the floppy section area:

fd[01]*:root:users:0660

Btw, haven't tested without the last line, maybe its not needed, but maybe it is.  Anyway after those changes I was able to mount windoze floppies as a normal user with # mount /mnt/fl

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Since I switched to kernel 2.6.1, I can no longer mount floppys.
Code:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/floppy/0,
or too many mounted file systems

Hi! I had the same problem. Solved it by adding "defaults"

e.g.:
/dev/floppy/0 /mnt/floppy vfat user,noauto,unhide 0 0 -->
/dev/floppy/0 /mnt/floppy vfat user,defaults,noauto,unhide 0 0

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Rather than adding the wrong options, you should just remove the wrong ones...

unhide doesn't work with vfat and will error out without mounting the partition.  Check your dmesg to verify this.

What about the ext3 floppies? I have no problem with vfat ones, I can mount them as you mention but when I try to mount ext3 floppies as a regular user I get:

[florin@guns /mnt]$ mount /mnt/floppy
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0,
or too many mounted file systems
[florin@guns ~]$ mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
mount: only root can do that
[florin@guns ~]$ mount -t ext3 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
mount: only root can do that

I can mount an ext3 floppy as root:

[root@guns /mnt]# mount /mnt/floppy
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0,
or too many mounted file systems
[root@guns /mnt]# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
[root@guns /mnt]# cd floppy/
[root@guns /mnt/floppy]# ls
lost+found  test

What am I missing here? What should I do to be able to mount ext3 floppies as a regular user too?

Info:
fstab entry:

/dev/fd0          /mnt/floppy   vfat,ext3     rw,user,noauto      0      0

uid=1002(florin) gid=1002(users3) groups=1002(users3),92(audio)

udev.permissions line:

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Are you sure you have an ext3 floppy? The usual floppies are too small for a journal. If you have ext2 floppy, which is most likely the case, just change the line in fstab to:

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy vfat,ext2 rw,user,noauto 0 0

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

shouldn't you just change it to 'auto', so it can mount more than one floppy type?

Let the machine do the work for you..

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Thanks mico and cactus.
I indeed had an ext2 floppy  ...

[florin@guns /mnt/floppy]$ df -T
Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
(...)
/dev/fd0 ext2 1412 14 1326 2% /mnt/floppy

*sigh* I should have checked in the first place :!:
Modified the fstab and it is all okay now.

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

i just upgraded to the testing repository (2.6.13.1-1 kernel and udev), and now i am unable to mount my FAT32 harddrive, which was no problem when i used the 2.6.12 kernel and devfs.

[root@Archbox trendkiller]# mount /mnt/fat
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
       missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

dmesg gives the following information:

FAT: invalid media value (0x00)
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev hdc.

my fstab file:

none                   /dev/pts      devpts    defaults                          0      0
none                   /dev/shm      tmpfs     defaults                         0      0

/dev/hdd             /mnt/cd     iso9660   ro,user,noauto,unhide      0      0
/dev/hdd             /mnt/dvd  udf            ro,user,noauto,unhide     0      0
#/dev/fd0            /mnt/fl      vfat          user,noauto                     0      0

/dev/hdc  /mnt/fat        vfat umask=000                                       0      0
/dev/hda3 /                  ext3 defaults                                            0      1
/dev/hda1 /boot           ext2 defaults                                            0      1
/dev/hda2 swap           swap defaults                                           0      0

Why can't i mount the vfat drive? is it necessary to rebuild the kernel to solve this problem?

Re: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

Are you sure your drive is /dev/hdc?  Not /dev/hdc1 or something?  Udev could be mapping it slightly differently...

I don't think a floppy can be /dev/hdc...
