Email problem

Hoping some body can give me some tips, I've recently changed from kde to gnome and having a bit of trouble with my emails. After setting up evolution as my mail client it just hangs when trying to receive emails then eventually times out. I've double checked the settings and they are OK. Kmail worked perfectly. I tried thunderbird  and that does the same thing also. What does Kmail do differently from the rest for it to work and not the others :?:
