upgrade mess

Hi,
I've been trying to upgrade my archlinux box from 7.1 to 7.2.
First i got a conflict iisue like:
ttf-bitstream-vera conflicts with xorg. Remove xorg
which, as suggested removing xorg
I proceeded to the pacman -Syu and now got a conflicting kde mplayer files issue.
no aupgrade again.
I tried to reinstall xorg so i could use X.
I had another conflict,  so used the -Sf options and it went through.
after configuring xorg with lhwd -a I get an error
failed to load module "bitmap" (module does not exist, 0)
failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not exist, 0)

any suggestion about how to solve the problem?

thanks

Re: upgrade mess

xorg may need setting up again .... path changes

I assume you can log into console ....

search wiki for xorg .... there are two pages they may help

or grab latest version of hwd & run hwd -x

HTH

Re: upgrade mess

hi,
I have used lhwd as i understand is the latest tool, albeit the fact that xorg complains about missing modules makes me thing the problem lies eslewhere.
It may be a path issue as you say or maybe the whole upgrade proces generated some incompatibility.
It seemed odd to me in the first place that to go through with a system upgrade I was forced to remove xorg on account of conflict issues.
I'm quite sure it shouldnt have been nev=cessary so I must have missed some step.

Re: upgrade mess

I like archlinux alot, as a matter of fact its the only distro im using on 2 laps and a desktop.
However this upgrade business seems tricky.
Im downloading the 7.2 disk as we speak, backup archives and go for a clean install.
I was naive enough to do this on my main distro, lol.
I will try again on another box, lees important, cos im willing to learn how to do it right.

thanks

Re: upgrade mess

I'd strongly recommend looking through the Front Page News articles, starting at the date you last updated that system. I know that's a lot of reading, but you will get all the info about the many system changes that have taken place in the meantime.

Check the wiki too, particularly the xorg7, udev, and mkinitcpio pages.

hwd -x, as recommended by Mr Green, will get you an up-to-date xorg.conf, and IMO is still the best tool for that job.
