AMD/ATI to open-source their drivers?

AMD/ATI is considering opensourcing their proprietary graphics drivers:

Let's hope that this happens and that nvidia follows!

This would be awesome if it actually happened - note, however, that the write-up does say "at least a functional subset" - so maybe the parts we really need open-sourced won't be.  Hard to say, but I"m hopeful. big_smile

Let's hope they open source a lot of it. I'd love to have functional drivers for the Ati card I'm stuck with.

Even a functional subset would do wonders. This is indeed great news, and actually brings hope for Linux users considering a new gfx card, not necessarily nvidia :-)

Also, intel just open sourced their drivers for the intel 965 chipset. They even look forward to seeing some community efforts and what it will bring in the future. Great stuff.

Re: AMD/ATI to open-source their drivers?

while (nVidiaRoxorzMuhBoxors)
    if (AMD += ATi)
        self.state = DONT_CARE;

Not spoken by the words of a fanboi but merely by the words of a very satisfied customer that has owned nVidia cards from the TNT2 through 6800GS (the 7900GTX makes me salivate and the 8000 series will probably make me salivate even more, although many are predicting it to be like the FX line)

If this purchase makes ATi (now AMD through the terms of the purchase) suddenly make cards that just smear nVidia across the floor I may switch, but I am not one of those who make their decision solely on those few FPS differences.

Re: AMD/ATI to open-source their drivers?

There's no possible way they're going to open-source their drivers.  That's far too much added accountablility for the gain.
