I have been using Openbox key combinations to start applications for several years, and I thought I understood them very well. But, I am switching from the Firefox browser to Vivaldi. I have successfully changed my Openbox menu to start Vivaldi instead of Firefox. I made the analogous change to my key combinations, but Super-w stubbornly continues to start Firefox instead of Vivaldi. I have both tried to reset it using "Reconfigure Openbox" and by logging completely out of my Xorg session to a console prompt and logging back in and running startx.
I have made identical edits to rc.xml in both ~/.config/openbox and /etc/xdg/openbox. Here is the relevant code:
<keybind key="W-w">
<action name="Execute">
<startupnotify>
<enabled>true</enabled>
<name>Vivaldi</name>
</startupnotify>
<command>/usr/bin/vivaldi-stable</command>
</action>
</keybind>There is no occurence of string "firefox" in either file. Why does Super-w still start Firefox?
PS - After posting this, I rebooted the system. Super-w still starts Firefox.

Haha I have this in my local "rc.xml" file too! ![]()

Also, please reset the "/etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml" file to the default.

</openbox_config>I restored the version in /etc/xdg/openbox to a file I had marked as original, but it may have been one I had edited prior to that version. I'll try to find a real original and restore it. It may take a while.
Tim
PS - The file seems to have been the actual original, so it should be good. Super-w still brings up Firefox, even after a complete restart of Xorg.
PPS - I have now restored /etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml from git.

Sure this is the handler of the shortcut and not eg. xbindkeys?
xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"to log all key grabs into the xorg log.

Seth, how would I determine that? My system does not seem to have an Xorg log, at least not in /var/log. And, the old Super-w worked to start Firefox, so why wouldn't it work the same way for Vivaldi?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#General
The log tells which client holds which grab (and an active grab will be required here)
The idea is that the openbox config has been meaningless itfp. and the shortcut is handled by something entirely different - and there still assigned to firefox. (Afaiu, the shortcut still executes firefox rather than just failing entirely?)

Ok, I found the xorg log in ~/.local/share/xorg.

I have spent all afternoon fiddling with this.
As a test, I created a previously unused key combination, W-z to start /usr/bin/zim. It does not do anything. So, Seth is apparently correct, my Super key assignments in openbox rc.xml have no effect, and the key combinations are being assigned somewhere else. I have no idea where. rc.xml is the only way I have ever done it, and it always worked, before. Old ones I assigned in the past still work, e.g., W-t starts urxvt and W-v starts vlc. But changing an old one or adding a new one does not work.

I finally found the problem. There was a third copy of rc.xml in ~/XDG_CONFIG/openbox and it apparently has precedence over all the others.
Thanks for your advice, drcouzelis and seth.
