[SOLVED] Starting Xorg hangs when using mesa 18.* on Ryzen 2400g

I upgraded to mesa-18.1.6-1 recently and it causes startx to hang. The only thing I can do when it hangs is using sysrq.
If I downgrade to mesa-17.3.7-1, then startx works fine.
This doesn't seem to be a kernel issue because it happens on both 4.17 and 4.18.
Looking at X's logs, the hang seems to happen after it loads glamoregl.
I've tried to tell xorg to not load glamoregl, but without it Xorg isn't able to find my screen...
The new amdgpu driver and mesa 18.* don't seem to like each other.

To get a better idea of the problem, remove xf86-video-ati (and check "lsmod | grep -E '(radeon|amdgpu)'")

On mesa-17.3.7-1, the driver that ends up finding the screen is modesetting, so I thought maybe saving x the search and telling it to use modsetting would work on mesa-18.1.6-1.
No luck though, since modsetting loads glamoregl as a submodule which causes the hang.

At least we know it's not interference by the radeon driver.
Try passing

amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

to the kernel parameters.
Are you sure the *only* thing is to sysrq? Can you eg. ssh into the machine for a remote inspection (assuming only the graphics stack is affected)

With those kernel parameters it hangs before I even get a tty to do startx (!)
I tried starting a web server and then triggering the hang and visiting the web server. Since that works I assume ssh would work also.

My motherboard was released recently and it only has one BIOS release which I'm running. (MSI B450I GAMING PLUS AC)

Here is what I got for logging into tty1, running startx, waiting 30 seconds, using sysrq to send SIGTERM to all processes then logging back in to collect the logs with journalctl --boot

Nothing stands out to me in the logs... Should I submit a bug report somewhere? But without anything in the logs maybe that wouldn't be productive either...

So uh, funny story. I was fed up and was getting ready to bisect mesa. Building mesa requires libglvnd, which I needed to install. When I tried to install it, pacman told me that it's in conflict with nvidia-libgl-beta.
I figured that nvidia-libgl-beta might be culprit and indeed it was. After removing it startx works on mesa 18.1.6-1!
The 2 hours I spent waiting for llvm-svn to build was worth it after all big_smile
