[SOLVED] running doom with valve's wine

Valve released proton (wine built into steam) to run windows only games https://steamcommunity.com/games/221410 … 5739350561
But I have problem running DOOM this way, screen is flickering with black frame. I have nVidia GTX1060 6GB with nvidia driver 396.51. Does anyone have luck running DOOM this way?

Does alt-tab to switch to your desktop and then switch back work?  I had that happen with DOOM but I'm running it through Lutris and it only happened once.  Open-source AMDGPU on an R9 380 4GB.

Alt+Tab, disabling composition, disabling steam in-game, killing plasma does not help unfortunatelly

So I assume you're KDE.  Are you running on Wayland or X?  I'm GNOME and Wayland has problems with games I've tried.  Running on Xorg however has far fewer problems.

Running on X. Tried Steam session in SDDM instead of plasma-desktop but still no success

Sorry then, alt-tab and X were the two issues that I experienced.  Hopefully someone else will be able to suggest something.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Seems like proton needs mesa 18.2 and llvm 18.2 but I have seen people run DOOM on Ubuntu with mesa 18.1.6. But on Arch it doesn't work.

It does work for me but not using Proton, using Lutris with Vulkan.

I just updated my nvidia drivers 396.54 and now DOOM actually works for me with Proton in Steam.

Re: [SOLVED] running doom with valve's wine

It seems I had problem with "r_renderAPI"
Some tutorials suggest to set it in game command line settings as "+renderAPI 1" but it was not working for me (probably because of wine in the middle), but editing config

./Steam/steamapps/compatdata/******/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/id Software/DOOM/base/DOOMConfig.local

to

r_renderAPI "1"

seems solved the issue
